Minister, learners sign Matric Exam Pledge for Class of 2024

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube will formally sign the Matric Exam Pledge alongside learners at Pretoria Central High School on Friday.

“The Matric Exam Pledge is a vital moment of commitment for the Class of 2024, marking their dedication to academic integrity, honesty, and discipline as they approach their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams,” the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said on Thursday.

By signing this pledge, learners publicly commit to upholding ethical standards during the exams and remaining focused on their goals.

“The signing of the pledge reinforces the gravity of the matric examinations, which are a gateway to further education, employment opportunities, and broader contributions to society.

“The signing of the pledge encourages learners to remain disciplined and committed to their studies while recognizing the support of their teachers, families, and communities in this crucial period,” the department said.

The examinations are set to run from 21 October to 27 November 2024, and marking will commence immediately thereafter.

Last month, the DBE reported that there were 732 448 full-time candidates enrolled for NSC examinations this year, which is 8 400 more than in 2023.

Delegates will gather in the Mother City in South Africa this month, when the second annual Healthcare Indaba takes place at Cape Town's CTICC. The two-day event forms part of the 2024 edition of Africa Health Congress (www.AfricaHealthExhibition.com), the premier healthcare gathering on the African continent.

Building on the success of its inaugural edition last year, the Healthcare Indaba 2024 expands to a two-day format. It dives into the realms of Global Health on day one and exploring AI & Digital Health on day two of the Congress (running from 22 to 24 October 2024).

Another new element to the Congress and the Indaba deliberations, is the dedicated forum within the Africa Health Congress 2024 entitled, “EmpowHER: Women in Healthcare”.

“Our goal is to create a lasting brand that celebrates female leadership and fosters a supportive community.  Our audience is eager to gain insights into the realities of leadership in healthcare and understand the journey it takes to reach the top. The mandate for our speakers will be candidness and honesty,  they will share their personal experiences, challenges, and successes in the hopes of inspiring the audience. Their stories and insights will help ensure the long-term sustainability of our industry through supporting women and celebrating their successes,” says Cynthia Makarutse, spokesperson for the organisers of Africa Health.

“Much like the Mining and Tourism Indabas which inspired it, the Healthcare Indaba has emerged as a crucial platform for shaping the future of our industry on the continent. This year's focus aligns with our commitment to position Africa at the forefront of medical innovation with worldwide impact,” says Makarutse.

The Indaba will feature discussions led by some of the most influential voices in African healthcare and technology.

“Global Health” – Africa claiming its right place on global stage.

Head of the Global Surgery Division at the University of Cape Town, Professor Salome Maswime, will chair the Global Health deliberations of the Indaba on day one. She explains that she is excited about hosting a dynamic programme that brings leaders together from all over the world and from all sectors.

“We hope to have thought provoking sessions about the role of Africa on the Global Health Stage. This will be a first for Africa Health, with the Vice President of the United Nations Foundation delivering the keynote on Global Health strategies for a resilient future,” she adds.

“I think most importantly it gives us an opportunity to discuss and find consensus on the strategies for Global Health and to align on international programmes, and to collaborate on new and strategic programmes. Many of us are involved on international Global Health platforms, yet the global health agenda is still mainly driven and owned by high income countries. We have an opportunity to re-imagine the future of Global Health for Africa.

“It is time for Africa to get involved on all matters related to Global Health. We cannot afford to be left behind. We have an obligation to provide universal health coverage and to improve healthcare in Africa,” says Maswime.

“AI & Digital Health” – building sustainable solutions.

The second day of Indaba 2024 (on Wednesday 23 October) shines the spotlight on AI & Digital Health.

“The significance of this event lies in its ability to convene leading industry experts, innovators and key stakeholders from across the continent to address pressing healthcare challenges and explore transformative solutions,” says Dr Mories Atoki, CEO of ABCHealth and a speaker on the day.

“The ABCHealth side forum on Digital Health will serve as a platform to discuss how AI and digital health can revolutionize healthcare delivery, making it more accessible and efficient. It is a critical moment for both the private and public sectors to explore more and collaborate on building sustainable systems that address Africa's unique healthcare needs through AI.”

For the people of Africa, Dr Atoki believes this congress provides hope.

“The conversations and outcomes from these sessions will not only influence policy but also drive tangible improvements in healthcare services, enhancing quality of life and reducing healthcare inequalities across the continent.

“For the medical sector, it presents a unique opportunity to explore new opportunities,  strengthen partnerships, share groundbreaking innovations, and leverage digital health means to drive healthcare accessibility and efficiency. This signifies progress toward better healthcare outcomes through improved access, affordability, and quality of care. By highlighting the potential of AI and digital health, we can pave the way for more inclusive, patient-centric care which can also bridge gaps in underserved areas,” she says.

“Africa's healthcare future relies largely on embracing digital interventions.  AI and digital health are not just trends—they are an essential part of a globally advancing economy that can help solve some of the continent's most pressing healthcare challenges, from limited access, specialized care to overburdened systems.

“Achieving this on a large scale requires robust ecosystems, supported by both regulatory frameworks and financial investments. Policy reforms and investments are essential to creating a thriving digital health ecosystem. It will also require multi-sector partnerships that prioritize patient safety, data protection, and equitable access and inclusivity,” says Dr Atoki.

“AI & Digital Health: The need to first address health data accessibility.”

“We cannot hope to effectively use the rapidly increasing AI  set of commodities that are becoming available globally in Africa, before we first address health data accessibility and governance locally” says Dr Chris Fourie, a medical doctor, machine learning operations (MLOps) engineer, researcher and online grassroots community organiser.

As another speaker on day two, he says: “My presentation is related to the foundation that we need (i.e. health data accessibility) in order to do any kind of quantitative analysis, data science, machine learning, or AI for health in Africa. When considering the potential impact and significance of these in Africa, a good place to start is with understanding the burden of disease in Africa.”

“Regularly published Global Burden of Disease data shows us that infectious disease and maternal child health are consistently top of the list for Africa. These should be considered when deciding where data science and AI interventions could target. As an example, Africa would stand to benefit a great amount from interventions that can drop the cost and increase the efficacy of primary health interventions,” says Fourie.

“While the scope for what AI can do is really broad, for Africa the capacity to help collect and utilise data for primary and pre-primary care could generate immense impact.”

Fourie says this could be realised as:

  • Broader and interactive patient health education (especially if in one's their own language) making existing health information more accessible.
  • Better health service accessibility e.g.
    • Encrypted / safe remote conversational / natural language health data collection.
    • Cost-effective, early and automated diagnosis and triage using multimodal data from existing patient records and new data from e.g. mobile personal devices.
  • Rapid and higher quality patient data linkage / aggregation and government action related to this data - e.g. the growth of national health data centres in the global south – this is very useful for toward data driven public health policy development.
  • Lower cost and quicker drug development e.g. to address rising resistance.
  • Personalised healthcare and clinical decision support tools, with data driven patient follow up, treatment tracking and dynamic treatment adjustment.

“I would like to see the initiation and ongoing development of multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder, participatory collectives to help provide effective channels of communication and cooperation between patients, healthcare service providers, researcher, funders and policy makers toward a future culture of open science and sustainable health equity.”

EmpowHER: Women in Healthcare: The power of she – A new class of women leaders.

Day three of the Africa Health Congress will see a long list of leading female voices in the healthcare space sharing their stories at a dedicated forum that celebrates female leadership and fosters a supportive community.

“Everything we are doing at Congress this year is about tackling the challenges wherever they may be located in the healthcare space and finding solutions. This is the same motivation also for EmpowHER as we invite trailblazing women from across Africa's healthcare scene to unite!

“This summit will ignite community, growth, and empowerment for established and emerging leaders. Through dynamic panels and keynotes, shatter personal and professional boundaries and emerge ready to champion change for women in leadership” says Cynthia Makarutse, spokesperson for the organisers of Africa Health.

Speakers on the day include the Chief Scientific Officer at the SA Medical Research Council Professor Glenda Gray, Microsoft's Kenya Country General Manager Phyllis Migwi, the World Bank's Lead: AI for Human Development Marelize Prestidge, and Wesgro's HealthTech Ecosystem Manager Mandi Swanepoel.

Indaba – an ecosystem of innovation.

"The Healthcare Indaba has become the intellectual core of Africa Health; it's a catalyst for change on a global scale,” says Makarutse.

“By bringing together diverse stakeholders at the highest echelons of their various fields in healthcare – including policymakers, facility directors, entrepreneurs, and academics – we are establishing an ecosystem of innovation that can truly transform healthcare delivery across Africa and inspire solutions worldwide.”

McKenzie reflects on 100 days in office

Location: News

McKenzie reflects on 100 days in office

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has reflected on his first 100 days in office as being characterised by "putting out fires" and ensuring that the sector has access to opportunities.

These opportunities include a new agreement to fund the film sector, as well as ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive in sport and the arts.

“One key observation of the first 100 days in government is that the ministry has had to respond to several crises and last-minute challenges. One example was the need to rescue the National School of Arts, which was facing closure due to overwhelming financial pressures.

“In August 2024, the Ministry also became aware of a crisis in South Africa’s imminent hosting of the U18 African basketball championships, known as the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) U18 Afrobasket.

“To safeguard South Africa’s international reputation as a credible host country, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) took over the handling of the event with less than two weeks to go, which ultimately saved the tournament,” the ministry said on Thursday in Johannesburg.

McKenzie and Deputy Minister Peace Mabe provided a full feedback report to the nation on their first 100 days in office following their swearing into office in the Government of National Unity (GNU) on 3 July 2024.

The Minister’s wide-ranging portfolio encompasses sport, arts, culture, heritage, recreation, social cohesion and nation building, the custodianship of archives and more.

“At the end of August, South Africa’s attendance at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru was also about to fail. The ministry had to step in at the last minute to ensure the young athletes were able to fly to South America. The athletes received their flights to Peru, with mere hours to spare.

“The South African team then delivered an outstanding all-round performance, finishing sixth in the overall medal standings, with a total of seven medals: three gold, two silver, and two bronze. Rising star Bayanda Walaza was confirmed as the fastest teenager in the world,” the ministry said.

Access to opportunities

McKenzie has signed a ground-breaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube.

“The new MoU aims to progressively transform access to both sports and cultural programmes in schools, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive in sport and the arts.

“This MoU marked a milestone in the GNU’s vision to deliver equality of access for all young people, particularly those in rural, township, and underprivileged areas,” the ministry said.

Furthermore, the Cultural and Creative Industries Bosberaad took place on 29 - 30 August and was attended by 72 sector and sub-sector organisations, with a total of more than 200 participants in attendance.

“The Bosberaad was a follow-up to bilateral meetings that the ministry had earlier set up with individual organisations and key industry players across different domains and disciplines.

“It assisted in reimagining a new sector ecosystem, where representative sector and sub-sector organisations can enjoy direct recognition and support from government.

“This reconfiguration has enabled the department to come up with a new funding model, which will be rolled out in the new financial year, built on principles of inclusivity, broad-based recognition and equitable distribution of available resources for sector-organisation support – as opposed to just funding a few, selected organisations,” the ministry said.

The ministry also provided new musical instruments and infrastructure to the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy and the Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha, which received audiovisual equipment and support.

“The ongoing process of formalising the uniquely South African motorsport of spinning is continuing apace, with the ministry being part of the announcement of two major new sponsors for the sport, Cell C and Kappa, with more support for the sport now flowing in from the private sector,” the ministry said. - SAnews.gov.za

4th National Shelter Indaba pioneers solutions for GBV survivors

Location: News

4th National Shelter Indaba pioneers solutions for GBV survivors

The 4th National Shelter Indaba has highlighted the urgent need for effective shelter solutions for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the National Shelter Movement of South Africa (NSMSA), initiated the 4th National Shelter Indaba, currently underway in Sandton, Johannesburg.

This significant initiative coincides with the department’s month-long campaign, Social Development Month, which reflects on and showcases the department's programmes and services.

Director of Victim Empowerment and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence within the Department of Social Development, Sibusiso Malope, delivered a compelling opening speech, emphasising the critical need for effective shelter solutions for GBV survivors.

“Addressing gender-based violence is not just a moral imperative; it is a critical human rights issue that affects the well-being of individuals and the stability of our communities,” Malope said.

Under the theme: “Progressive Sheltering: Strengthening Shelters in South Africa”, this year’s indaba seeks to drive meaningful change in the fight against GBV by focusing on key pillars of the National Strategic Plan (NSP).

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), globally, about one in three women (30%) have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, predominantly from intimate partners.

The statistics underscore the severity of the issue.

In Eastern and Southern Africa, this figure rises to 42%, which not only impacts individual survivors but also hinders family and community development, costing economies up to 4% of gross domestic product (GDP), as reported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

“This crisis represents a fundamental violation of human rights and poses significant barriers to women’s participation in education and the labour market,” Malope emphasised.

He outlined the pivotal role of shelters in providing immediate safety and comprehensive support services.

“Shelters offer more than just a safe haven. They are essential in delivering trauma-informed counselling, legal assistance, and life skills training, which empower survivors to rebuild their lives,” he explained.

Malope said effective shelter programmes must include features such as secure locations, community integration, and cultural competence. He underscored the need for inclusive policies that ensure accessibility for marginalised populations, including LGBTQI [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (one's sexual or gender identity, and intersex individuals].

“We must ensure that our services are sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and needs of all survivors,” Malope said.

Staff training, including personnel being trained on trauma-informed practices to meet the unique needs of survivors, is also key.

“Well-trained staff are crucial for providing high-quality care and support,” Malope said.

Malope discussed the significance of data-driven practices, stating that regular monitoring and evaluation of shelter programmes is essential for improving services and ensuring accountability.

“By collecting and analysing data, we can better understand the effectiveness of our interventions and adapt to the needs of survivors,” he said.

Improving policies

Recent developments in policies and community responses to GBV in South Africa reflect government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue through a multifaceted approach.

The Trafficking in Persons Act (TiP) aims to combat human trafficking, which often intersects with GBV, providing a legal framework to protect vulnerable individuals.

Additionally, the Domestic Violence Act (DVA) has been strengthened to enhance protections for survivors, ensuring they can access immediate support and legal recourse.

The Sexual Offences Act (SORMA) and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act have also been revised to impose stricter penalties on perpetrators, reinforcing the message that GBV will not be tolerated.

Malope emphasised the importance of these legislative frameworks.

“Robust laws are essential, but they must be accompanied by community-driven responses to be truly effective.

“Programmes like the Victim Support Services (VSS) and the National Gender-Based Violence Strategy (NGBV) are critical for ensuring that survivors receive holistic support.”

He further highlighted that community initiatives, including awareness campaigns and local support networks, play a vital role in shifting societal attitudes toward GBV.

“Engaging communities is key to prevention, as it fosters a culture of respect and accountability, ultimately contributing to the safety and empowerment of all individuals,” Malope said.

The two-day Indaba features keynote addresses, panel discussions, and opportunities for collaboration among government departments, Chapter 9 institutions, and civil society organisations, policymakers and advocates.

Topics include innovations in shelter services, mental health support for survivors and community engagement strategies.

“This conference is a call to action for all of us to work collaboratively in creating safer communities,” Malope said.

As participants engage in discussions and share best practices over the two-day initiative, the NSMSA aims to develop actionable strategies to enhance shelter services for survivors of GBV, reinforcing the importance of a survivor-centred approach in responding to this pervasive issue.

The National Shelter Movement of South Africa plays a pivotal role in the implementation of Pillar 4 of the NSP on GBVF, and is an umbrella body for 99 shelters across the country.

These shelters provide essential care and support services for individuals affected by GBV, offering safety, counselling, healing, empowerment for survivors as they rebuild their lives, and interrupting and breaking the cycle of violence. – SAnews.gov.za

North West government to take service delivery programmes to communities

The North West Provincial Government will provide services to residents of several municipalities on Friday, 18 October 2024, as part of its Accelerated Service Delivery Programme – Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded.

Communities that are expected to benefit tomorrow include Manamakgoteng, Modderkuil, Mabele-a-pudi, Ledig, Mogwase, Segakwaneng in Moses Kotane Local Municipality and others that fall under Moses Kotane Local Municipality and Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.

According to the provincial government, this all-encompassing service delivery programme will be led by Premier Lazarus Mokgosi.

He will be joined by MECs for different provincial departments, the local and district municipalities’ Executive Mayors, and the local traditional and Khoi-San leadership.

Tomorrow’s programme will include the handing over of school furniture, comprising 160 chairs and 80 tables, as well as five chairs and tables for teachers, at Okomelang Primary School in Sandfontein, near Mogwase.

In keeping with the Department of Social Development’s undertaking to support and strengthen the qualifying non-profit organisations’ capability to provide services to the needy, three non-profit organisations, namely Lesedi Modderkuil Home Based Care, Arise and Shine and Ithuso Disability Community Centre, will each receive a dummy cheque worth over R500 000.

The Rooikraal brick-making company, located in Rooikraal village, near Mogwase, will be presented with a voucher to confirm that their products meet the requirements set by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

This, the provincial government said, is part of the provincial government’s small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) product development programme that seeks to promote compliance with industry standards.

In addition, two more local female farmers will be given bulls in line with the provincial government’s broader strategy to empower women in agriculture.

A crop farmer from Legogelo village will receive bags of sunflower seeds and diesel as part of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Crop Massification Programme.

Vegetable seedlings and garden tools will also be handed over to Modderkuil Clinic and Lesedi Modderkuil Edu Care.

Also, three completed RDP houses will be handed over to beneficiaries from Mabele-a-pudi village, while 10 title deeds will be handed over to beneficiaries from Madikwe.

Some of the public services to be delivered as constant features of the Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded programme include compliance inspection of local tuck shops and taverns, patching of potholes and blading of identified gravel roads.

The team will also provide consumer education, mass registration of the indigent, registration for social support services, and registration and updating of local business details on the Central Supplier Database (CSD).

They will do health screening, clearing of illegal dump sites, agricultural advisory services and handing over of sports equipment and attire to identified local sporting teams.

The North West Provincial Government is also expected to roll out similar programmes to other district municipalities in the coming weeks. – SAnews.gov.za

MEC Chiloane concerned as 25 learners in Bronkhorstspruit fall ill after consuming snacks

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, has expressed serious concern over a foodborne illness that broke out this morning at Mshuluzane Mayisela Primary School in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit.

According to the department, about 25 learners fell ill after allegedly consuming snacks purchased from street vendors outside the school.

“The incident was reported in the morning when learners began showing symptoms of body itching and stomach pains, approximately 30 minutes after consuming the said snacks.

“Emergency services responded swiftly to the call. A total of 25 learners were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Of these, eight learners were taken to Kungwini Clinic and 17 to Zithobeni Clinic, all by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) ambulances,” the department said.

The department said that out of the 25 learners who were affected by the food poisoning incident, 22 have since been discharged after receiving treatment.

“Two learners were taken to private medical facilities by their parents, and one learner remains at Zithobeni Clinic, where they are still under medical observation. The condition of the remaining learner is being closely monitored,” the department said.

Law enforcement and health authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the safety of the products being sold by the street vendors and to prevent future occurrences.

Chiloane emphasised the importance of ensuring that learners only consume safe food.

“We urge parents, guardians, and schools to be vigilant. Our priority is the health and safety of our children, and we wish the affected learners a full and speedy recovery,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Public warned against swimming in water canals

Location: News

Public warned against swimming in water canals

The Department of Water and Sanitation and the Vaalharts Water User Association (WUA) have warned communities living near water canals against swimming or conducting any recreational activities in these bodies of water, as this poses a high risk of drowning.

This follows the drowning of a 13-year-old boy from Bonita Park, an informal settlement located along the Vaalharts Main Canal, in the small town of Hartswater within the Phokwane Local Municipality in the Northern Cape on Tuesday.

It is reported that the 13-year-old child disappeared under water while swimming in the canal around 4pm.

The department said the South African Police Service (SAPS) divers are on site since the incident, in an effort to retrieve the body.

The department and the Vaalharts WUA, which manages the canal, has also been engaging with the local municipality, including the parents of the child and community members, as police work around the clock to retrieve the body.

“The Vaalharts WUA have also opened all head sluices in its weirs along the canal to prevent the child from getting stuck. The canal is running at full capacity, as the WUA had undertaken maintenance over the past weekend on dams in the Taung area,” the department said.

According to the department, the water is currently running at 1.3 metres per second in speed, and volume can go up to 100 000 cubic metres per hour.

“This means the water levels cannot be dropped at this time to ensure that dams with low levels recover, and the municipalities and irrigators continue to have access to water. As soon as it is possible to lower the water without the risk of putting lives in danger due to no access to water, it will be effected,” the department explained.

The Vaalharts Main Canal stretches about 140 kilometres from the Vaal River at Warrenton in the Northern Cape, passing through the towns of Jan Kempdorp, Hartswater, Magogong, Taung and ends at the Pudimoe Water Treatment Works in Pudimoe, which ultimately treats and transfers potable water to Vryburg in the North West.

The canal is part of the Vaalharts Water Scheme, which has about 1 200 kilometres of canals managed by the WUA, of which the Vaalharts Main Canal is the longest and largest.

The department said drowning incidents are likely around canals and other water bodies during the summer season when temperatures are high and members of the community seek to cool off.

The department appealed to community members to desist from swimming or fishing in canals as it is dangerous.

“We urge parents and communities to keep children away from running water, as it poses endangerment to their lives.”

The department added that ‘No Swimming’ signs have been placed along the canal to caution the public on the dangers of swimming in canals, and regularly conduct public education and community awareness campaigns on dam and canal safety.

Awareness campaigns are also conducted for school kids, teachers and parents, as well as interactions with the municipality.

“The WUA also provides training to volunteers in communities around such infrastructure to be lifesavers and provide them with the necessary life saving equipment to enable them to assist members of the community, who find themselves in life threatening situations around water bodies,” the department said.

Meanwhile, Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Sello Seithlolo, is expected to visit the area on Saturday to assess the situation. – SAnews.gov.za

Vantage Capital Concludes a €66M Deal With Camusat

Location: Business
Vantage Capital Group

Vantage Capital (www.VantageCapital.co), Africa's largest mezzanine fund manager, announced today that it had closed a €66 million mezzanine investment in Camusat Holding S.A.S, the proceeds of which will be used to refinance debt and fund the capital expenditure required for expansion of the group's AktivCo division. Vantage Capital's investment is part of a global financing package of €81m provided in consortium with Eurazeo, a leading European investment group.

Camusat is a leading telecommunications player managing fully integrated and sustainable business models for the deployment and management of telecom infrastructure whilst championing the decarbonization of mobile network operators (MNOs). Partnering with major investment funds that support green investments, Camusat is pursuing its ambition to become the leading “Infra as a Service”  partner for the mobile telecom industry, with a broad presence in emerging markets, especially in Africa. The group operates across twenty countries (including fifteen on the African continent) and through two synergistic divisions, AktivCo and OpCo:

  • AktivCo is the Infrastructure as a Service business structuring and financing complex transactions under long-term contracts to transform the telecom infrastructure by applying sustainable business models. With a strong focus on low carbon footprint solutions and digitalization of operations, AktivCo accelerates the expansion and modernization of MNOs' infrastructure and reshapes the telecom world for cleaner communications; and
  • OpCo is a telecom service partner that combines technical expertise with operational excellence to design, build, and manage  telecom infrastructure.

Since inception, Camusat has been capitalizing on the rapid expansion of the telecom industry, but most importantly the ever-growing need of MNOs to outsource non-core operations to specialized service providers. This trend is observed worldwide but is more prevalent in emerging markets, especially Africa. As network coverage remains relatively low, MNOs are being pushed by regulators to ramp up their infrastructure investment especially to increase coverage in rural areas, where most of the population lives. MNOs therefore need to contract with service providers like Camusat to support the rapid and viable roll-out and management of their tower infrastructure.

In this context, Camusat has established itself as the key strategic partner for telecom operators such as Orange, Moov Africa (Maroc Telecom group), MTN, Vodafone, Airtel and others. The group's comprehensive offering drives long-term performance for mobile networks and inclusive connectivity, digitalization and sustainable access to technology, making it a one-stop-shop for MNOs. Its multi-decade experience and track record attest to the quality of its performance.

Mr. Richard Thomas, CEO of Camusat, commented, “we are very pleased to have concluded the transaction with Vantage Capital. This financial and strategic partnership comes at a time when we are further expanding our presence in Africa, and we are confident that Vantage Capital's extensive network and expertise on the continent will be a great support in achieving our objectives.”

Mr. Luc Albinski, Executive Chairman at Vantage Capital, added, “we are proud to partner with such a leading and dynamic group as Camusat. Throughout the process, we have been impressed by management's deep knowledge of the telecom industry, but also their firm commitment to help increase connectivity in parts of Africa where network coverage remains underdeveloped.”

Mr. Thibaut de Rodellec, Deputy CEO of Camusat, said, “we were convinced from our very first discussions that Vantage Capital and Camusat would be a great fit. We always look beyond the financial aspect when forming new partnerships, and we were glad to discover that our firms share common ethics, vision and dedication. We will ensure this partnership is a success for all stakeholders.”

Mr. Driss Benabdeslam, Partner at Vantage Capital, concluded, “by investing in Camusat, we are backing a group that is engaged in a vital and buoyant industry and constantly strives for operational and corporate excellence. Camusat has incorporated best-in-class ESG practices and implemented various CSR measures directed at supporting local communities and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions from the telecom sector. We are thrilled to support the group in creating more value and generating an even greater positive social impact over the years to come.”

Mezzanine debt is an intermediate form of risk capital, which is situated between senior debt, the least risky tranche of the capital structure, and equity, the riskiest tranche of the capital structure. It combines elements of both debt and equity thereby providing companies with long-term funding on terms which are less dilutive to shareholders than pure equity.

Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) And Deep Tech Innovations Take Centre Stage

Location: Business
Expand North Star

Expand North Star 2024 (www.ExpandNorthStar.com), the world's largest startup and investment event, continued its journey of innovation on its third day at Dubai Harbour. Attendees from around the world witnessed revolutionary advancements in Applied AI and Deep Tech, demonstrating how these technologies are disrupting industries and solving complex global challenges.

Integrated with GITEX GLOBAL, Expand North Star runs until 16 October, providing a powerful platform for over 1,800 exhibiting startups and more than 1,200 investors managing assets exceeding USD $1 trillion.

Applied AI and Deep Tech Innovations Redefine Healthcare and Space Innovation

Day three was a showcase of next-generation solutions in robotics, AI, and deep tech, providing a glimpse into the future of these sectors.

Cutting through the noise were innovative startups such as China's RoboCT with their innovative exoskeleton technology, launching the UGo Rehab Exoskeleton, specifically designed for patients with lower-limb dysfunction, spinal cord injury, strokes, or cerebral palsy. Dr. Tian Wang, Founder and CEO of RoboCT Group, stated, "UGo enhances the rehabilitation process and delivers an effective walking training solution by integrating advanced sensors, data analysis, and research, empowering patients to rehabilitate more effectively at home."

On the digital health frontier, JADE introduced a platform tailored for neurodivergent children, including those with ADHD, down syndrome, and autism. The app's sophisticated tracking of eye movements, cognitive response times, and memory functions equips healthcare professionals and educators with precise data to create personalised care and learning strategies.

Meanwhile, scanO, a pioneering Indian-born deep tech company, is leading the way in developing generative AI models for predicting disease progression. The company showcased its flagship product, scanO air—the world's first contactless AI-powered robotic system for oral health screening—revolutionizing early detection and diagnosis.

In space technology sector, Triggers-Reports from Mauritius introduced Triggers-sat, a satellite platform that provides high-resolution imaging and 3D modeling to assist businesses and governments in areas such as natural resource management and climate risk disaster monitoring.

Rising International Participation from Asia and Latin America

As the global innovation hub, Expand North Star continues to see international participation rise, showcasing how regions and countries are pushing boundaries with novel solutions.

Tatiana Riera, COO of ApexBrasil, highlighted Brazil's expanding presence at Expand North Star: "From just 20 startups in 2019, we have expanded to 45 startups this year, along with four innovation hubs. Brazil is a great hub for fintech because of the diversity in social levels, so most of our unicorns come from fintech. We also focus a lot on Deep Tech, AI, and climate tech solutions since we have six biomes and need to take care of them. We have a company that uses natural foam to build soundproof material for construction and another company building silent tractors that run on renewable energy."

Similarly, Singapore's SGTech made a noteworthy debut at Expand North Star, emphasizing the importance of cross-border collaboration in driving tech-driven solutions forward. Alex Ng, Exco Member, SGTech said: "Singapore's innovative startups are making a significant impact at Expand North Star 2024, with six outstanding companies exhibiting under the Singapore Pavilion. These companies showcase cutting-edge technologies across various sectors, including digital twins, industrial AI and biotech, with the event serving as a groundbreaking global launchpad for startups to foster valuable networking with investors."

Africa's Path to Economic Growth
With global participation continuing to flourish, the spotlight also turned towards Africa, where burgeoning tech ecosystems are paving the way for a new wave of entrepreneurs and innovators. H.E. Savannah Maziya, Minister, Ministry of Information, Communications & Technology, Eswatini, alongside other thought leaders, emphasised the importance of structured development to tackle unique market challenges and unlock Africa's economic potential.

Celina Lee, CEO & Co-Founder, Zindi, South Africa, highlighted the trend of talent returning to Africa to start companies and create ecosystems that foster innovation and attract global corporations like Microsoft to set up labs in Ghana and Nairobi.

Speaking on the challenges facing Africa, Olatunbosun Alake, Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Lagos State Government, Nigeria, said, "The greatest challenge in Africa is education. In Nigeria, if you look at the most educated parts, they show economic value, whereas in the north, where education levels are not as high, economic productivity is lower. There needs to be an African Renaissance of education funding across the board because if you drive education, educate, and enlighten people, people will change the environment.”

Across its four-day span, Expand North Star continues to shed light on the future of industries through defining events such as GITEX Impact, Fintech Surge, Future Blockchain Summit, and Marketing Mania. These events underscore how emerging technologies are transforming the way we live and are also playing a pivotal role in reshaping the future.

Revitalising SA’s national parks to world destinations

Location: News

Revitalising SA’s national parks to world destinations

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has undertaken a bold initiative designed to elevate the country’s parks to world-renowned tourism destinations.

This will be achieved through the new Kruger, Kirstenbosch-iSimangaliso Icon Status Strategy, or KISS, which is focused on reforming each of these iconic sites into world-class destinations that set new standards for conservation, education, and sustainable tourism.

“Throughout the seventh administration we will reimagine each of our botanical and zoological gardens of the future. It will involve integrating cutting-edge technologies, enhancing visitor experiences, and implementing innovative conservation practices.

“By modernising infrastructure and embracing digital innovations, we aim to transform these destinations into more accessible and engaging experiences for all visitors, both local and international,” Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Dr Dion George said on Tuesday in Cape Town.

Addressing the media on his 100 days in office, the Minister said elevating these iconic sites will inspire a deeper appreciation for the country’s environment and reinforce South Africa's leadership in global conservation initiatives.

“However, the transformation of these sites will span beyond environmental stewardship and into economic development. The KISS initiative will aim to create new jobs in the green economy and provide opportunities in fields such as environmental science, sustainable tourism, and wildlife management.

“By investing in training and capacity-building programs, we will empower local communities and foster inclusive growth from the ground up. Moreover, as South Africa prepares to assume the G20 Presidency next year, we see a unique opportunity to showcase these world-class sites on the global stage,” the Minister explained.

He said his department plans to host key G20 meetings and international conferences at locations like Kirstenbosch and the Kruger National Park, which will position South Africa as a premier destination for future global dialogues on sustainability and conservation driven economic development.

Captive lion breeding

Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, the Minister said he has taken a clear and decisive stance against captive lion breeding.

“The process initiated by my predecessor will continue. The Fair Industry for Lions, Leopards, Elephants, and Rhinos initiative, known as the FILLER, is dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable future for our country’s most iconic wildlife.

“Our goal is to boost economic activity and create jobs in eco-tourism and conservation, all while safeguarding these magnificent creatures for generations to come,” the Minister said.

Small-scale fishers and coastal communities

Recognising the difficulties faced by small-scale fishers and coastal communities, the Minister has initiated a process to simplify the application for fishing licenses.

“By removing bureaucratic barriers and streamlining procedures, we aim to make it easier for local fishers to obtain the necessary permits to operate legally and sustainably. This will empower individuals and small enterprises, promote inclusivity in the fishing industry and ensure that economic opportunities are accessible to those who need them most.

“In addition to policy reforms, I have embarked on a comprehensive 12-harbour tour to engage directly with the communities that rely on our maritime resources. So far, I have conducted oversight visits at four of these harbours, where I have met with local fishers, community leaders, and stakeholders. These visits have provided invaluable insights into the everyday realities and opportunities within the sector.”

During these engagements, issues ranging from infrastructure needs and safety concerns to market access and training opportunities were discussed.

“Moreover, I am meeting with lawyers for conservationists and small-scale fishers on the litigation currently heading to court. I am certain we can reach a settlement that will ensure the future of our African penguin population in the wild,” the Minister said.

He was reflecting on the milestones of the work that has been done since his appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa to lead the department.

The President appointed George and Deputy Ministers, Bernice Swarts and Narend Singh, on 03 July 2024 to lead the department under the Government of National Unity (GNU).

In the short to medium term, the department will prioritise climate change and energy; fisheries, particularly small-scale fisheries, and aquaculture; wildlife and biodiversity; and conservation efforts and environmental protection initiatives. - SAnews.gov.za

Minister announces project preparation bid window

Location: News

Minister announces project preparation bid window

A first of its kind project preparation bid window that will allow state owned entities, public entities and municipalities to apply for project preparation support has been announced.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson and Acting Head of Infrastructure South Africa (ISA), Mameetse Masemola launched the project preparation bid window in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

“As we unveil the first-of-its-kind project preparation bid window, we are taking a decisive step towards achieving the economic growth and job creation that our country so desperately needs,” said the Minister.

The bid window invites submissions from national and provincial governments including state owned entities, public entities, municipalities and private sector projects to apply for project preparation support.

Macpherson said the initiative was a crucial step toward expanding infrastructure investment in the country adding that the announcement represents an important moment for South Africa and an evolution in the work that Infrastructure South Africa does.

“No longer are we talking about the pipeline of infrastructure projects, we are building.

“This initiative will enable us to move beyond the talking phase and focus on action—on laying the foundations for sustainable infrastructure that will support long-term development.

“It is not just about bricks, mortar, or steel. It is about creating a solid foundation for our economy to thrive, for our people to prosper, and for our nation to rise.

“Infrastructure development touches every aspect of our lives, from the water we drink to the roads we drive on and it has the power to transform not only our economy but our society as a whole. The project preparation bid window we are unveiling today is therefore a game-changer.”

Macpherson said for far too long, one of the major barriers to infrastructure development in South Africa has been the lack of sufficient project preparation support.

“We are providing the tools necessary to ensure that infrastructure projects are shovel-ready, so they can be implemented efficiently and effectively,” he said.

Working together with ISA at the helm, government will see more cranes in the sky, more roads being built and more renewable energy projects coming online.

Masemola said one of the major contributing factors to under investment in infrastructure is the lack of sufficient project preparation support for infrastructure projects.

“To address these challenges and unlock the potential of infrastructure investments in South Africa, the National Treasury has granted ISA a project preparation fund to support project development to accelerate the pace and quality of infrastructure delivery,” she said.

Masemola said in future, ISA seeks to catalyze seed funding to blend with other project preparation facilities available to develop viable and bankable infrastructure projects.

The project preparation support is set to extensively expand the ability of construction projects to be implemented in South Africa. This as one of the major contributing factors to under-investment in infrastructure is the lack of sufficient project preparation support.

The new bid window builds on the 12 infrastructure initiatives President Cyril Ramaphosa previously announced at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA) in March this year which already benefits from the first R179 million in project preparation funding allocated by the National Treasury to ISA to support catalytic projects that otherwise would not progress to implementation stage.

Applications

Applications for the next phase of project preparation bid window announced by the Minister today can made at ISA.
Applications close on 06 December 2024 and is specifically for projects valued at more than R1 billion which have the potential to crowd in investment from alternative sources such as Multilateral Development Banks and Development Finance Institutions other than the national fiscus.

Successfully selected projects will receive comprehensive project preparation assistance including funding structuring support, technical support, legal support, institutional and governance arrangements, capacity deployment and regulatory compliance studies.

The following priority sectors will be considered for project preparation financing:

Energy
Water and Sanitation
Transport (major roads, airports, ports and freight transport)
Human Settlements (excluding student accommodation)
Social Infrastructure (Education & Health)
Municipal Infrastructure (focus will be on infrastructure projects that have potential to leverage private sector financing)
Industrial Development Zones & amp, Special Economic Zones (IDZs &amp, SEZs).

Guidelines for the project preparation bid window can be found on www.infrastructuresa.org. – SAnews.gov.za

Reflecting on the programme's prior success, Tito Alai, who was the Group Chief Commercial Officer of Celtel and Zain Group, said: “Throughout its history, the competition was a source of pride in the accomplishments of our young men and women. Sponsoring the Africa Challenge was a great strategic marketing and CSR investment, reflecting our commitment to education, enriching students' lives, and boosting participating institutions' reputations.”

Past winners echo these sentiments, emphasising the transformative impact of the competition. James Tuitoek, Vice Chancellor of three-time winners Egerton University in Kenya, noted the university's pride in its students, along with the fact that the competition had not only enabled them to set up a computer lab with 24/7 internet access for students but also positioned Egerton as a university of choice for international students. Similarly, when Ibadan University in Nigeria won in season three, the House of Representatives Chairman on Education, Hon. Farouk Lawan praised the programme as an educational platform playing a pivotal role in promoting education across Africa.

In addition to garnering praise from administrators and participants, University Challenge Africa also brings together some of the brightest minds from universities across the continent, with diverse interests and fields of study, presenting an opportunity for businesses to recruit future talent.

The return of the successful University Challenge Africa will be welcome news to the continent, reflecting the competition's rich tradition of educational excellence and great entertainment, and delivering on the promise of African development.

Rosatom Accelerates African Nuclear Development

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

Russia's state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom has joined the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference – scheduled for November 4-8 – as a gold sponsor. The sponsorship aligns with the corporation's ambitions to strengthen its presence in Africa and follows a strong of deals forged with various African countries in the fields of nuclear power development, knowledge sharing and mining.

Currently, there is a surge in nuclear energy adoption in Africa, with projects targeting 15 GW of operational capacity by 2035, the Nuclear Business Platform estimates. Over 10 African countries are looking to embrace nuclear energy, the majority of which are leaning on global partnerships such as those fostered with Rosatom to accelerate project development. Rosatom's return to AEW: Invest in African Energy reflects its growing intention to support projects in Africa.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit http://www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Rosatom signed an agreement with the Republic of Congo – which has ambitions to enhance the adoption of nuclear energy - in July 2024. The deal will see the parties collaborate on the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy and hydroelectric power. This aligns with the Republic of Congo's efforts to diversify its energy mix beyond oil, leveraging Rosatom's expertise to improve energy access.

The agreement followed the signing of an MoU with Guinea-Conakry in June 2024 to cooperate on the development of floating nuclear power plants. The corporation currently operates the world's only floating co-generation nuclear power plant – Akademik Lomonosov - and aims to construct an additional 7 facilities worldwide. Suitable for remote regions with undeveloped or unreliable power grids, floating nuclear offers a range of benefits for African countries. As a small nuclear power plant, the facilities provide access to clean and affordable power for hard-to-reach communities, offering an environmentally-friendly energy option with 24/7 operational capacity. The agreement with Guinea-Conakry will see Rosatom construct floating nuclear plants, equipped with RITM-200 reactors. Power will be used to support industrial and domestic consumption.

Rosatom also signed an agreement with Burkina Faso's Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country. Construction will be complete by 2025 with the project expected to double Burkina Faso's power production by 2030. The deal also features a clear roadmap to enhance the country's nuclear power adoption, including the establishment of a regulatory framework for nuclear energy.

In addition to nuclear power development, Rosatom is driving nuclear energy capacity building and training across Africa. The company aims to utilize its expertise in the industry to support human capital development across the continent, with various programs in place to achieve this goal. In South Africa – the continent's only nuclear power producer – Rosatom signed an agreement with the state-owned power utility Eskom for a nuclear action plan for the period 2024-2026. The plan comprises joint education initiatives, joint degree programs and workforce training. South Africa plans to continue utilizing nuclear power to fulfil both its domestic and industrial needs. Recently, the Koeberg station – accounting for 5% of South Africa's power supply – has been approved to run for an additional 20 years. The Rosatom-Eskom plans aims to support this by equipping the workforce with the requisite skills and capacities.

To support nuclear production in Africa, Rosatom is also advancing uranium mining across the continent. The company plans to start mining uranium in Namibia by 2029, with plans in place to complete the prospecting and exploration phase of the Wings Project by 2026. At a total investment of $500 million, the project will produce 5,000 metric tons of uranium per year.

“Rosatom represents a strong partner for Africa's nuclear industry. The company is focused on supporting the construction of nuclear energy facilities while concurrently scaling up capacity building, mining activities and regulatory support. Nuclear has the potential to transform the continent's power landscape and with partners like Rosatom, Africa is well positioned to tap into this growing market,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Improved sentiment is rooted in real economic progress – President

Location: News

Improved sentiment is rooted in real economic progress - President

With just over 100 days since the members of the Government of National Unity were sworn into office, President Cyril Ramaphosa says the county has witnessed a marked increase in confidence in the direction of the country.

In his weekly newsletter, the President noted that South Africans across various sectors were increasingly supporting government’s efforts, which is reflected in recent opinion polls.

One of the polls conducted by Ipsos revealed that the proportion of participants who believe the country is on the right track has doubled since the last surveys were conducted in April and June this year.

“There is also rising confidence in our country’s economic growth prospects by business and local and international investors. This was evident in the engagements I recently had with business leaders in Beijing and New York, and that Deputy President Paul Mashatile had with business leaders in London,” the President said.

In September, the Bureau of Economic Research and Rand Merchant Bank published its first Business Confidence Index since the formation of the new administration. It pointed to “cautious optimism” about improving business conditions in key economic sectors. It said improved electricity supply and political certainty following the elections had likely contributed to this improved business confidence.

“Sentiment is more than a ‘warm and fuzzy’ feeling. It is made possible by real developments in the economy and the country. Business confidence goes beyond discussion in boardrooms and conference halls.

“It is about the interest that is shown in our economy by all investors, both local and offshore. Sentiment has a direct impact on people’s lives as it can manifest itself in increased investments that can result in job creation,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa stressed that this rising confidence would have a tangible impact on the country’s fiscal health.

“Improved investment sentiment will benefit our country’s fiscus. A stronger economic outlook will improve South Africa’s credit rating, which in turn will facilitate greater access to global capital markets and lower our borrowing costs.

“When we spend less money on debt servicing costs, government has more space to increase its expenditure on building public infrastructure and providing education, healthcare, basic services and social support,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa noted that improved sentiment had strengthened the currency, lowering the cost of imports like oil, which in turn reduces fuel prices and the overall cost of living for South Africans.

“Increased business confidence attracts higher levels of private investment in the economy. When investors are more optimistic about their business prospects, they are more likely to invest more capital and expand their existing operations. Improved confidence also encourages the start-up of new businesses.

“More business activity creates more jobs and opportunities for our people. As businesses grow, they need to hire more employees and are able to increase wages,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa explained that when people feel secure in their jobs and income, they spend more, boosting economic activity and increasing government revenue.

He attributed the improved sentiment to the successful transition to the new administration, which enjoyed broad support and ongoing reforms that were addressing key economic and social challenges.

Another key development has been the country’s successful efforts to resolve the energy crisis.

“The country has had more than 200 days without load shedding. This has made a considerable difference to the lives of citizens and the operations of businesses. This work has also unlocked unprecedented levels of investment in the energy sector,” President Ramaphosa said.

Reforms in the logistics sector were also gaining momentum, with improvements in the operational performance of the nation’s port and rail networks. These advances are expected to boost not only economic activity but also the everyday lives of South Africans.

While President Ramaphosa acknowledged that economic growth has yet to accelerate, he expressed optimism that the government was laying a solid foundation for long-term progress.

“It is still early days for the Government of National Unity. The growth of our economy is still to pick up pace. However, a firm foundation is being laid, our growth prospects are being revised upwards and we are heading in the right direction,” the President said.

The President concluded by emphasising the importance of maintaining this momentum.

“It is clear that the improved confidence of the South African people and the positive sentiment among investors are well-founded.

“Our task now is to work together to further encourage hope and optimism by making a real and substantial difference in the lives of all South Africans," he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Government invests billions in road infrastructure projects in KZN

Location: News

Government invests billions in road infrastructure projects in KZN

With an investment of billlions of rands into the N2 and N3 road infrastructure projects in KwaZulu-Natal, the province is witnessing the biggest road infrastructure upgrade campaign that has been undertaken by government in several decades.

This investment is expected to play a key role in unlocking economic growth and has to date provided training for 1 000 young people, including civil engineers, quantity surveyors, chartered accountants and artisans.

“Once completed, we will have covered 135 kilometers, including the east, west and north and south areas. The total value of the project will be in the region of about R50 billion.

“Easing traffic congestion, making these roads safer both for passengers and freight is a major objective of the project. At the moment, these areas have been plagued by congestion.

“Seventy percent of the freight that moves on land moves through this N2 and N3 corridor to the ports of Durban and Richards Bay,” Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said on Thursday.

As part of the Transport Month programme, Creecy assessed the progress on the projects, starting by vising the Key Ridge project in Peacevale, before making her way to the EB Cloete project upgrades and the N2 KwaMashu to Umdloti River Bridge.

The visit signaled the South African government’s commitment to fast-track the delivery of critical road infrastructure, which is key to unlocking economic growth and the potential of the country.

“The first objective is to widen the existing roads. On the N3, we want to increase the lanes to four or five lanes. We also want to increase the number of lanes on the interchanges.

“This particular project is extremely interesting because it is about efficiency and road safety. Once it has been completed, there will be a new roadway that connects the N3 from one high level piece of ground to another high-level piece of ground.

“This will eliminate the sharp descent areas and the very sharp curves. That will have an enormous impact on road safety. It will also cut down on travel time and make it much more efficient,” the Minister said.

This work will promote the work of small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) and the work of young people, whether they are in the artisan class or whether they are university graduates.

“They have an opportunity to undertake onsite training so that they can be registered as professionals or as artisans in their particular category of work.

“One of the major problems that we face in this country, in terms of economic development and growth from a construction point of view, is that it is difficult to for small construction companies to grow and attain the necessary experience so they can move up the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) registration ladder,” Creecy said.

Contractors, who wish to work in the public sector, must register with the CIDB. The Register of Contractors (RoC) supports clients in infrastructure procurement, and categorises and grades contractors from 1-9, according to financial and works capability.

“Thirty percent of the spend of this huge project is on subcontractors. The total value of this particular package of work is about R8 billion. The intention is to make sure that by the time a company is finished their particular package of work, they are able to upgrade their CIBD grading and in the future, be able to undertake a higher-level category of work and work of greater value.

“With this project, we have trained 1 000 young people to date, including civil engineers, quantity surveyors, chartered accountants and artisans. Once they have completed their training, they will be able to register as professionals,” Creecy said.

Throughout the history of South Africa, State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) have played an important role in giving practical training to graduates of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and universities.

“In... this project, we are spending R340 million on the training of young people. The intention is that overtime, there will be 2 000 young people that will receive their formal technical training on all these construction sites,” the Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

SA called to protect girl children

SA called to protect girl children

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on South Africans to protect, promote and respect the rights of girl children, as the world commemorates International Day of the Girl Child.

“On this day, we recognise the rights of girl children everywhere: their right to live, freedom and safety; their right to education and health care, their right to opportunity and above all, to be treated equally.

“Let us commit to protecting and nurturing our nation’s girl children. Together, let us, as South Africans, be aware of the rights of the children, and to respect them, and to protect them, and above all, to honour them. Let us build a country where every girl child can fulfil her potential and realise her dreams,” President Ramaphosa said on Friday.

He lamented that in many parts of the world, girl children are subjected to “gender apartheid”.

“In many parts of the world, girls face a terrible plight. They are victims of conflict, human trafficking and sexual violence. In places like Afghanistan, girls face the worst form of gender apartheid. They are denied the rights to education, freedom, as well as even having a voice.

“In some parts of the world, young girls are taken out of school early to work inside and outside their home,” the President said.

South Africa is committed to all global instruments aimed at the prosperity of girl children.

“South Africa is committed to upholding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and all global instruments to advance the rights of women and girls.

“Gender equality is enshrined in our Constitution. We have progressive laws to advance the rights of girl children to ensure that they have opportunities and to protect them from abuse and exploitation.

“I call on all South Africans to be part of the global effort to protect an advance the rights of girls,” said the President.

According to the United Nations (UN), International Day of the Girl Child “focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights”.

In December 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child. – SAnews.gov.za

Water curtailment implemented throughout eThekwini

Location: News

Water curtailment implemented throughout eThekwini

The uMngeni-uThukela Water Board has implemented water curtailment throughout eThekwini Municipality, effective from today, to reduce the volume of water abstracted from the uMngeni system.

This follows a recent announcement made jointly by eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba and the uMngeni-uThukela Water Board.

The water curtailment is being implemented at the directive of the Department of Water and Sanitation, which issued a notice to uMngeni-uThukela Water Board to reduce the volume of water abstracted from the uMngeni system to their licensed volumes of 470 million megalitres per annum (m3/annum), meaning a reduction on the current sales and abstraction volume of 8.4%.

Xaba said the curtailment is aimed at enabling continued water availability, including during periods of below-average rainfall.

“The risk of not enforcing the abstraction limit is that should a drought occur, there would not be sufficient water in the system for uMngeni-uThukela Water to continue providing the eThekwini Municipality with a reliable water supply,” Xaba said.

Xaba emphasised that the water curtailment is not water shedding, where there is a schedule for water cuts at certain times.

“The purpose of the water curtailment is to avoid water shedding by bringing down the total volume used in a controlled manner,” Xaba said.

The mayor reiterated his call to eThekwini residents to use water sparingly to assist in reducing high water consumption.

“The demand for water in eThekwini far outstrips supply, and we continue to plead with all stakeholders - both our residential and business customers - to work with us to address this challenge. Some of the contributing factors to the high-water usage include rapid urbanisation, and aging infrastructure, which causes water leaks and illegal connections,” Xaba said.

The average water consumption in eThekwini is very high, as it is between 270 and 298 litres per capita (person) per day (l/c/d), compared to the international average of 173 l/c/d.

Xaba said the curtailment is expected to be implemented for a period of 12 months, and during this process, the city’s teams will be monitoring the system and manage excessive water demand.

In ensuring that residents are not adversely affected, the city will be implementing the following interventions:
•    Installation of restrictors in water metres to all consumers.
•    Pressure reduction in the reticulation network.
•    Metering all unmetered consumers.
•    Improving turnaround time in repairing leaks and pipe bursts through deployment of ward-based plumbers.
•    Community education in water conservation.
•    Disconnection of illegal connections. – SAnews.gov.za
