Craig Miller, CEO of mining company Anglo American Platinum, has been confirmed to speak at the upcoming African Mining Week 2025 conference. During the event, Miller is expected to shed light on the company's strategy in Africa as well as the continent's pivotal role in strengthening the global PGM supply chain. Miller will speak on a panel titled: South Africa's Strategic Influence in the Global Platinum Group Metals Market.

Taking place October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town, African Mining Week is Africa's premier gathering for mining stakeholders and provides a strategic platform for industry leaders, investors and companies to unlock emerging opportunities across the continent's mining value chain. As the CEO of the world's largest platinum group metals (PGM) producer, Miller is uniquely positioned to discuss the continent's emergence as a global PGM supplier and the impact resource-rich nations such as South Africa will have on future supply chains.

African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town. Sponsors, exhibitors and delegates can learn more by contacting sales@energycapitalpower.com.

With global demand for PGMs increasing - driven by applications in electric vehicles and clean energy technologies – Anglo American Platinum is positioning itself as an instrumental part of the continent's PGM value chain. The company operates several of South Africa's key PGM producing assets, including the 5.8-million-ounce (oz) Tumela Mine, the 310,000-oz Mogalakwena Mine, the 217,000-oz Kroondal Mine, the 160,000-oz Dishaba Mine, among other projects. In Zimbabwe, the company manages the Unki Platinum Mine, one of the country's largest with an annual production capacity of 64,000 oz.

For 2025, the company has set a refined production target of up to 3.4 million oz across its PGM projects, supported by ongoing mine expansions and new investments across its African portfolio. As such, African Mining Week 2025 will serve as a crucial platform for Miller to share insight into the company's investments in Africa and the road ahead for the continent's PGM production.

Through his participation, Miller is expected to outline the company's future direction, strategic priorities and ongoing projects, while reinforcing cooperation with African and international partners to enhance operational performance and market access. The South Africa's Strategic Influence in the Global Platinum Group Metals Market session offers a strategic opportunity for conference attendees to gain insight into both the country's PGM market and its future role as a global supplier.

Africa Is Not the Next Frontier — It’s the Blueprint: Rethinking Innovation on Africa Day

By Yi He, Co-Founder of Binance (www.Binance.com)

Each year, Africa Day serves as a celebration of the continent's culture, history, and progress. But in 2025, Africa is doing more than celebrating — it's leading.

For too long, Africa has been positioned as a “frontier market,” a place waiting to catch up. That narrative is outdated. Africa is not waiting to be included. It is already setting the pace, through innovation born out of necessity, creativity rooted in culture, and progress driven by community.

At Binance, we've witnessed firsthand how innovation looks different in Africa. It doesn't always begin in formal boardrooms or with multi-million-dollar funding rounds. It often starts in WhatsApp groups, community meet-ups, and with side-hustlers using their mobile phones to build. It's a bottom-up revolution shaped by real-world needs.

Take Mary Usaji, a developer and project manager at ICP Hub Kenya. After being scammed, she turned to blockchain not as a buzzword, but as a tool. With support from platforms like Binance, Mary educated herself, rebuilt her confidence, and now leads blockchain development training for others. Her story is not just one of recovery, but of leadership — and it reflects a larger movement led by African women who are redefining the tech landscape.

There's also Emmanuel, a Web3 content creator and crypto influencer. His journey into the world of cryptocurrency began in 2014 when he launched his first eCommerce store. Faced with the challenge of integrating payment gateways, Emmanuel discovered Bitcoin, which offered a borderless solution for receiving payments from anywhere in the world. This discovery changed the way he handled business and finances, opening up new possibilities in investment and payment systems. By embracing crypto, Emmanuel became part of a larger movement of entrepreneurs revolutionizing their industries. His story is one of growth, financial literacy, and a mindset of continuous learning, embodying the transformative power of cryptocurrency for business and personal empowerment.

Or Chris Howard, the founder of Story, a premium marketplace for sneakers and collectables in Cape Town. His passion for sneakers turned into a thriving business that not only caters to sneakerheads but also embraces new technologies. By adopting cryptocurrency payments through Binance Pay, Chris made transactions smoother for his customers, allowing them to use cryptocurrency as a mainstream payment method. His story is one of adaptability and growth, and it reflects a wider trend where African entrepreneurs are embracing innovation to elevate their businesses and create unique experiences.

Innovation in Africa isn't theoretical. It's practical, tested daily against the pressures of currency instability, unreliable power, and low-trust systems. These are the conditions where bold ideas are stress-tested, and where blockchain technology has found meaningful, everyday applications.

While many countries debate blockchain regulation, several African communities are already using it to solve pressing problems. Stablecoins are powering cross-border payments for families and small businesses. NFTs are being used for digital identity and authenticating African art. Smart contracts are making community projects more transparent and accountable.

This isn't leapfrogging, it's building better from the start. And it's not happening on the margins. It's shaping global thinking on what sustainable, inclusive innovation looks like.

Africa Day is more than a cultural celebration. It's a call to pay attention — because what's happening here is a preview of where the world is going. Africa is showing that resilience, community trust, and resourcefulness are not traits to overcome — they are competitive advantages.

At Binance, we're not just investing in Africa; we're learning from it. Through community education, partnerships, and local capacity-building, we are committed to supporting this growth from the ground up. We believe innovation should be accessible, inclusive, and adapted to local realities, and there is no better place to demonstrate this than Africa.

To date, our work through Binance Charity (https://apo-opa.co/4myVTcW) and Binance Academy (https://apo-opa.co/4myVTcW) has supported women in over 10 countries, including South Africa and Kenya, with blockchain education, mentorship, and scholarships. These programs aren't about charity; they're about unlocking talent and empowering long-term participation in the digital economy.

The world once called Africa an “emerging market.” But emergence implies something that's still in progress. That no longer applies. Africa has emerged — not only as a user of innovation but as its architect.

On this Africa Day, let's move beyond outdated narratives. Africa isn't just part of the future — it's building it. And for those paying attention, it's clear: the rest of the world would be wise to follow its blueprint.

African Development Bank’s Adesina Warns of Economic Shockwaves from U.S. Tariffs, Calls for Strategic Global Engagement

Location: Business
African Development Bank Group (AfDB)

As the United States imposes higher tariffs with global ramifications, African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has warned that these measures could trigger significant economic disruptions across Africa, affecting numerous nations and accelerating a strategic shift in global partnerships.

In an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Dr Adesina revealed that 47 of Africa's 54 countries will be impacted directly by the new U.S. trade policies, with potential declines in export revenues and foreign exchange reserves.

“When those currencies weaken, two things will happen: first, you will find that most of these countries are import-dependent. So, you're going to find that high inflation becomes a problem,” said Adesina. “And secondly, you find that the cost of actually servicing a lot of their debt, which is foreign currency debt, but in local currencies, is going to get worse.”

Almost all African countries have been hit by higher tariffs announced by the Trump administration, with at least 22 nations facing up to a whopping 50 percent for almost all their products. Among the hardest hit countries are Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Botswana, Angola, Algeria, and South Africa.

The impacts of these higher tariffs are further exacerbated by significant cuts to USAID programs, which have already begun affecting access to essential medical supplies and humanitarian services in many countries, raising serious concerns about the future trajectory of U.S.-Africa relations.

Africa's Strategic Response

Despite the challenges, Adesina emphasized that Africa cannot afford a trade confrontation with the United States, noting that the continent accounts for only 1.2 percent (approximately $34 billion) of America's global trade—with a trade surplus of just $7.2 billion.

Instead, he proposed a pragmatic three-point strategy for the continent: Engage the U.S. through flexible and constructive trade negotiations, diversify export markets to reduce dependency on any single partner, and accelerate the African Continental Free Trade Area implementation to unlock the potential $3.4 trillion market.

He stressed the need to expand Africa's domestic market and boost domestic savings to develop consumption as a bigger share of its GDP, leveraging its massive population growth. More importantly, the continent must take advantage of the increasing external interest in its natural resources, such as cobalt and lithium, to negotiate a better trade and investment deal.

Addressing speculation that Africa may shift more decisively toward China in response to the higher U.S. tariffs, Adesina dismissed any notion of binary alignment. “U.S is a key ally of Africa—and so is China,” he stated. “Africa is building bridges, not isolating itself.”

He stressed that Africa seeks balanced, transparent, and mutually beneficial partnerships with all major global players, including the U.S., China, the European Union, and the Gulf states. “I think at the end of the day, we want to make sure that whatever deals that are being done with Africa are transparent, fair, equitable, and led by Africa and in Africa's interests,” Adesina reiterated.

Beyond Aid: Driving Africa's Self-Reliance

Dr. Adesina, who concludes his second and final term as president of the Bank in September, firmly rejected the long-standing paradigm of foreign aid dependency. “The era of aid as we've known it is completely gone,” he declared, calling instead for bold investments in domestic resource mobilization, infrastructure, and value-added industrialization.

He said aid must be turned into concessional financing to allow multilateral financial institutions like the African Development Bank to do more for the continent by mobilizing more private capital to develop and derisk projects.

While Africa represents nearly 20 percent of the global population and under three percent of global GDP, the Bank Group chief pointed to a resilient and transformative growth narrative: ten of the world's twenty fastest-growing economies are in Africa.

He highlighted flagship initiatives under the African Development Bank's “High 5” agenda that have impacted more than 565 million people through investments in power, food security, industrialization, regional integration, and initiatives to improve the quality of life of the people of Africa.

Over the past decade, the African Development Bank has invested more than $55 billion in infrastructure to bolster economic integration across Africa, alongside other critical investments to drive inclusive growth. It is by far the largest financier of infrastructure across Africa.

Adesina also cited the great potential of the Mission 300 project, a joint initiative by the World Bank and the African Development Bank to connect 300 million people in Africa to electricity by 2030.  “Because without electricity, what can you do? You can't industrialize, you can't add value, you can't be competitive in the dark,” he said.

He highlighted the achievements of the Africa Investment Forum, launched in 2018 by the Bank and eight other partners, saying it has since mobilized more than $225 billion in investment interest to the continent. The Forum is a multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary platform that advances projects to bankable stages, raises capital, and accelerates deals to financial closure.

Adesina believes that despite its challenges, Africa is the largest greenfield investment destination in the world, and it remains “the investor's dream.”

“We got hydropower. We have a massive youth population that can become the labor force of the world. Sixty-five percent of the arable land left in the world to feed almost 9.5 billion people by 2050 is in Africa, so what Africa does with it will determine the future of food in the world,” he affirmed.

  • The new upgrade increases operational efficiency at Sasol's plant, while reducing NOx emissions significantly
  • Project is expected also lead to water consumption savings equivalent to about 64 Olympic pools per turbine annually
  • GE Vernova (www.GEVernova.com) announced this project at Enlit Africa 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa

GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) today announced the successful completion of the modernization of global energy and chemical company Sasol's Secunda power plant in Mpumalanga. The modernization included the replacement of the existing pre-combustor system with a new DLN1+ combustor supplemented by the Fuel Gas Module (FGM) skid to increase the operational efficiency of the two installed 9E gas turbines and reduce carbon emissions.

This project serves as a model for modernizing power plants across Africa. As the continent faces increasing energy demands, initiatives like this highlight how innovative solutions can enable more efficient energy production with reduced emissions, without requiring entirely new infrastructure.

The upgrade led to significant improvements, including:

  • Reduction of NOx emissions significantly below the guaranteed values of 25 ppm, representing a reduction of three quarters from previous level.
  • Avoidance of using water as a diluent with the DLN technology, with an expected water consumption saving equivalent to about 64 Olympic pools per turbine annually.
  • There was an efficiency improvement compared to the previous combustor, translating to approximately 10,000 metric tons less CO2 emitted per gas turbine, supporting Sasol's environmental objectives.
  • Extension of the maintenance intervals, reducing downtime and operational costs.
  • Enhanced reliability of the power supply delivered to the national grid.

"This project exemplifies our purpose to electrify the world," said Joseph Anis (http://apo-opa.co/4k6G5fI), President and CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. "Building on our advanced combustion technologies, we are helping Sasol address South Africa's energy needs more efficiently. Together, we are demonstrating how advanced technologies can deliver tangible benefits for both businesses and communities."

This project will be showcased at Enlit Africa (http://apo-opa.co/4k3OEYH), taking place from 20 – 22 May at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa. GE Vernova's participation will include interactive activities at booth C22 in Hall 3 and speaking sessions covering a wide range of topics, including: a keynote on technology driven transformation, smart grids and the future of energy management, digitization and modernization of projects and accelerating women in energy.

GE Vernova has contributed to the development of the energy infrastructure in Africa for over a century, supporting power generation, transmission and distribution solutions, energy sector software applications, talent development, and community outreach.

TotalEnergies to Drill in 2026, Regulatory Reform Gains Momentum

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

TotalEnergies is preparing to begin offshore drilling in South Africa in 2026, pending final regulatory approvals, according to Mike Sangster, the company's SVP for Africa Exploration & Production. Speaking at the Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris, Sangster emphasized the company's ambition to expand its multi-energy strategy on the continent, with South Africa poised to play a central role in that vision.

The announcement coincides with significant legislative developments in South Africa's oil and gas sector. In April, the government published the draft regulations for the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act, inviting public comment and signaling a renewed commitment to reform. The regulations will outline the procedures for implementing the Act – approved in November but not yet in effect – ushering in a more modern, investor-oriented framework for hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Establishing a Fit-for-Purpose Framework

For years, the lack of a clear and sector-specific legal framework has impeded South Africa's ability to attract sustained exploration activity and unlock its offshore potential. The Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act aims to rectify this by establishing transparent licensing systems, defining state and Black Economic Empowerment participation and clarifying production-sharing mechanisms.

Crucially, the Act seeks to create an enabling environment that balances investor interests with national development goals. It provides detailed guidance on the application and granting of exploration and production rights, introduces more predictable fiscal terms and offers mechanisms to manage environmental and social responsibilities. By aligning South Africa's regulatory framework with international best practices, the government is positioning the country to compete more effectively for operator capital, particularly as global exploration budgets become more selective and carbon-conscious.

Igniting Interest in the Orange Basin

South Africa's offshore acreage, particularly in the Orange Basin, has been gaining momentum on the back of transformational discoveries in neighboring Namibia. Within South African waters, the Brulpadda and Luiperd finds in Block 11B/12B remain the most commercially significant to date, estimated to hold more than 600 million barrels of oil equivalent. While TotalEnergies has since exited the block, citing internal portfolio shifts, the company's re-engagement with the broader South African market suggests continued belief in the basin's long-term potential.

Last August, TotalEnergies officially became operator of offshore exploration Block 3B/4B, positioned southeast and on trend with neighboring oil discoveries, including the company's Venus discovery in Namibia. The Orange Basin represents one of the last untapped frontiers capable of delivering large-scale oil and gas volumes. With a more supportive regulatory backdrop taking shape, South Africa is well-positioned to attract the kind of deepwater investment needed to de-risk its acreage and build out its domestic gas infrastructure — a critical step toward energy security and industrial growth.

Positioning South Africa for Investment at AEW 2025

As the government works to implement the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act, African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies in Cape Town offers a high-profile platform to promote the country's renewed upstream vision. AEW is expected to convene regulators, IOCs and service companies to discuss the commercial implications of the legislative overhaul and chart a path forward for exploration and development in South Africa.

“For companies like TotalEnergies – whose multi-energy strategy includes natural gas, renewables and decarbonized operations – a stable and transparent regulatory framework is key. Sangster's statement reflects growing confidence in South Africa's policy direction, and signals to the broader investor community that the country is preparing to welcome a new wave of responsible, large-scale investment,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, African Energy Chamber.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Unlocking Africa’s $180 Billion Digital Trade Economy

Location: Business
dmg Nigeria events

The future of African trade is digital, and it's unfolding. From Dakar to Durban, a quiet but steady transformation is taking shape. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global trade hit a record $33 trillion in 2024, with developing economies, including Africa, playing a growing role in that expansion.

The African Free Continental Trade Area offers the largest free market, including 55 countries, a population of 1.3 billion and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. The opportunities are vast, yet the strategies required for industrial players to source, move and manage raw materials and finished goods remain a challenge.

“The continent's digital economy is projected to reach $180 billion by 2025, up from $115 billion in 2020, thus contributing significantly to Africa's GDP, creating new job opportunities, and expanding regional trade. Digital trade is transforming the continent's economic landscape, creating new opportunities for real economic growth, productive job creation, and poverty reduction.” H.E. Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment

“Building on this rapid expansion, our focus must shift from isolated digital initiatives to a fully integrated ecosystem that streamlines every step of trade—sourcing, supplying, logistics and payments. By integrating these functionalities on a single platform, Matta enables manufacturers to navigate sourcing headaches and suppliers to manage cross-border complexities with confidence and unlocks new markets in Africa in real time. This holistic approach is what will transform digital trade's potential into tangible, inclusive economic growth across Africa.” Mudiaga Mowoe, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Matta.

Launched to enable sustainable African economies, Matta's integrated ecosystem—today powered by the Matta digital marketplace (www.Matta.Trade) and the Flux logistics management tool, with Oxide Finance (Matta's upcoming trade-financing and cross-border payments platform) arriving soon—empowers manufacturers and suppliers across food & beverage, home & personal care, paints & coatings, agro-processing, automotive assembly, textiles, construction, and beyond with truly end-to-end sourcing, movement, and settlement. Rather than supplanting traditional trade networks, this unified platform amplifies human partnerships through real-time visibility, traceability, and seamless transactions.

This evolution in digital trade and industrial growth is one of the key conversations that will take centre stage at the West Africa Industrialisation, Manufacturing & Trade (West Africa IMT) Summit and Exhibition, set to take place from October 21-23, 2025. West Africa IMT is a high-level platform for government leaders, investors, manufacturers, and technology innovators to align practical solutions and policy frameworks for accelerating Africa's industrial transformation.

Matta, Africa's integrated ecosystem for industrial trade, will join other industry stakeholders across the continent at West Africa IMT 2025 to discuss the potential opportunities for industrial growth in the West African sub-region. As manufacturers increasingly seek more innovative, more efficient ways to power production beyond physical infrastructure and policy support, there's an urgent need for systems that simplify sourcing, enhance transparency, and ensure supply chain reliability. Matta addresses these challenges by connecting African manufacturers directly to verified suppliers of raw materials and commodities, ensuring business continuity in an environment where procurement bottlenecks often slow production timelines.

Digital platforms address multiple challenges simultaneously: procurement complexities, logistics coordination, payment processing, and data-based planning. By integrating these capabilities into industrial operations, West African economies can accelerate development timelines and establish competitive manufacturing centres that participate effectively in global markets.

As African nations chart independent economic paths, digital trade platforms like Matta will significantly influence how quickly and effectively new industrial capabilities develop. The transformation in African trade is already underway, with effects that will continue to reshape economic relationships for years to come.

South Africa clarifies position on Tanzanian banana imports

South Africa clarifies position on Tanzanian banana imports

The Department of Agriculture has dismissed speculations regarding an alleged ban on the import of bananas from Tanzania into South Africa.

This follows recent media reports suggesting that Tanzanian authorities are considering banning South African agricultural imports, based on speculations that South Africa does not permit banana imports from Tanzania.

In a statement issued this week, the department stressed that there is a strong and cooperative relationship between the two countries regarding agricultural trade, and that South Africa has never imposed a ban on banana imports from Tanzania.

The department explained that the National Plant Protection Organisation of South Africa (NPPOZA), operating under the department’s authority, hase previously been working closely with its Tanzanian counterpart to negotiate market access for various plant and plant product commodities between the two nations.

“Tanzanian avocados have been exported to South Africa over the past four years and have a counter seasonal advantage to local produce, which closes the gap for local consumption. The two technical counterparts from both South Africa and Tanzania are currently in negotiations to facilitate market access to allow the safe trade of banana from Tanzania into South Africa,” the department said.

According to the department, in February 2025, the department received an official market access application from Tanzania to export bananas to South Africa. This triggered the scientific pest risk analysis (PRA) process by NPPOZA, which is a mandatory step in determining phytosanitary import requirements to prevent the spread of harmful pests and diseases.

“The processes will be conducted in accordance with relevant phytosanitary regulatory frameworks and relevant standards of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). It is mutually beneficial for both nations to allow the PRA process to proceed, so that scientifically justified phytosanitary import conditions can be developed, conditions which aim to safeguard biosecurity,” the department explained.

The department highlighted the critical need to ensure biosecurity in agricultural trade, citing the example of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4), the most destructive banana disease recorded in history, which poses a serious threat to the banana industry globally.

Once the envisaged PRA process has been concluded, the department said, a draft phytosanitary import requirements will be finalised and officially notify Tanzanian authorities. Only after both countries agree with the drafted phytosanitary import requirements, will the importation of bananas from Tanzania commence.

“As a requirement and in accordance with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and IPPC’s international prescripts, when dealing with agricultural trade matters, parties officially notify each other in case there will be a ban or lifting of a ban of a particular imported produce, or product,” the department said.

The department reiterated that South Africa has never issued any ban on Tanzanian banana imports, as market access had never been formally granted or denied. South Africa has never received any official notification or intent from Tanzanian authorities indicating a ban on South African exports. – SAnews.gov.za

Africa-First Energy Policies: Turning Vision Into Investment

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

Africa is entering a pivotal phase in its energy transformation, characterized by a growing shift toward “Africa-first” energy policies. Despite contributing less than 4% to global emissions, Africa faces the world's most severe energy access challenges – with approximately 600 million people lacking electricity and 900 million without clean cooking solutions. With $47 billion in oil and gas capex in 2024 – a 23% increase year-over-year – Africa is proving its value as a competitive and resilient energy investment destination. This surge reflects growing investor appetite, strengthened policy frameworks and a renewed focus on project bankability.

In this context, African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 – taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town – serves as the continent's leading forum for turning vision into tangible investment. With a focus on public-private partnerships (PPPs), blended finance and strategic energy projects, the event brings together government leaders, financiers, developers and technology providers to advance deals, foster collaboration and position Africa as a global energy leader.

Building Institutions for Local Investment

A wave of institutional and policy advancements is laying the groundwork for increased local investment in energy. A key milestone is the establishment of the Africa Energy Bank (AEB) by the African Petroleum Producers' Organization (APPO) and Afreximbank, with an initial capital of $5 billion. Headquartered in Abuja and set to launch in June 2025, the AEB will finance oil and gas infrastructure projects, serving as a bold step toward regional energy self-sufficiency and resource sovereignty.

At the same time, the African Development Bank (AfDB) is supporting long-term energy planning. In Algeria, the AfDB has launched a strategic dialogue to shape the 2025–2030 Country Strategy Paper, aligning national goals with sustainable, diversified energy development.

In South Africa, the success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) illustrates how structured procurement can generate market certainty. The latest round secured 1,760 MW of solar PV capacity backed by R31.4 billion ($1.7 billion) in investment — with 49% local ownership and 46% equity held by Black Economic Empowerment entities.

Scaling Investment through PPPs and Blended Finance

As Africa's energy project pipeline expands, PPPs and blended finance have become essential tools for scaling investment. The AfDB's $10 million concessional equity stake in the ARM-Harith Successor Infrastructure Equity Fund, a $200 million regional vehicle, highlights how development finance institutions can de-risk infrastructure and crowd in private capital. The fund supports AfDB's target to electrify 300 million people by 2030 through sustainable energy solutions.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Program illustrates the power of blended finance in scaling innovation. With R12.8 billion ($678.8 million) allocated to eight projects delivering 615 MW of storage across three provinces, the initiative enhances grid stability and achieved a 35% cost reduction from the first bid round – a clear sign of growing cost efficiency.

Frameworks for African-Led Growth

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), ratified by over 48 countries, offers a powerful framework for prioritizing African-led energy development. By promoting intra-African investment flows and removing trade barriers, AfCFTA enables energy projects to be sourced, financed and executed within the continent. With Ghana spearheading the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative – engaging eight pilot countries – the agreement is fostering regional cooperation to scale African energy solutions and reduce external dependency. Once fully operational across more than 50 member states, AfCFTA is set to accelerate an Africa-first approach to infrastructure, technology, and capital deployment in the energy sector.

Meanwhile, the African Energy Commission continues to strengthen institutional cooperation across the African Union to support sovereign energy strategies. A prime example of African private-sector leadership is Coscharis Technologies' $4 billion solar project in Nigeria – the largest renewable energy initiative in West Africa – reflecting a shift toward domestically-driven, large-scale investment in clean energy that aligns with national priorities and regional ambitions.

“Africa's energy future must be shaped by African priorities, African solutions and African investment. At AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, we are not just talking about the energy transition – we are driving real deals and partnerships that put Africa-led development at the center of the global energy conversation,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Eswatini’s Minister of Natural Resources and Energy to Speak at AEW 2025

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

Eswatini's efforts to scale up investment in its mining and renewable energy sectors will take center stage at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, with the kingdom's Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Prince Lonkhokhela Dlamini confirmed to speak. Taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town, AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 is the continent's premier energy event and will spotlight Eswatini's strategic initiatives to attract foreign investment in critical minerals, support energy independence and advance sustainable development.

Prince Dlamini's participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 reinforces Eswatini's commitment to leveraging strategic partnerships and international forums to attract capital and technology into both its mining and energy sectors. The kingdom recently celebrated a major milestone with the financial close and construction launch of the 13.5 MW Lower Maguduza Hydro Power Project, a public-private initiative that underscores Eswatini's drive to achieve greater energy independence and sustainability through renewables.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Eswatini is also making significant progress toward universal energy access through the newly launched Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) project. Backed by international financial institution the World Bank, this initiative aims to connect 50,000 new households – benefitting 200,000 people – to electricity using both on- and off-grid solutions, with a focus on underserved rural communities. Supported by over $100 million in concessional financing, the ASCENT project will enhance energy security, build institutional capacity and improve livelihoods, making Eswatini one of Africa's frontrunners in equitable and sustainable electrification.

In the mining sector, Eswatini is actively working to position itself as an emerging market for critical minerals, following the launch of the second phase of a national mineral mapping program in partnership with South Africa's Council for Geoscience in November 2023. Using AI-based geoscientific techniques, this initiative seeks to unlock the country's vast yet underexplored mineral wealth – ranging from gold and iron ore to a broader portfolio of high-demand critical minerals. As part of its outreach to global investors, Eswatini is creating an enabling environment for private sector participation in mineral exploration, production and job creation.

Stepping into this picture, Minister Dlamini's participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 aligns with the goals of Eswatini to open its doors to investors in both energy and mining. By sharing insights into investment opportunities, policy developments and major projects, Minister Dlamini will not only promote greater foreign spending in the kingdom, but position Eswatini as a top destination for energy and mining developers.

“With strong regional partnerships and a focus on innovation, Eswatini is rapidly becoming a compelling destination for critical mineral exploration and clean energy investment,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.
