No load shedding implemented for nine months

Eskom has now reached more than nine months without having to implement load shedding.

This, the energy utility said, marks a significant milestone in its “commitment to providing reliable electricity to South Africa”.

“As of [Friday] Eskom has successfully completed over…275 consecutive days...without implementing load shedding since 26 March 2024. This achievement underscores Eskom’s dedication to addressing the country’s energy challenges through its investment in the Generation Recovery Plan and enhanced maintenance protocols.

“Eskom continues to utilise the December summer break to increase planned maintenance activities to further improve the reliability of its generation fleet as many industries have shut down for this period, with maintenance averaging at ~8 000MW,” the power utility said.

Eskom explained that its Generation Recovery Plan has made significant improvements in performance “particularly by reducing unplanned outages by ~8.1% compared to the same period last year.”

“Additionally, there was a year-on-year diesel savings of R16.20 billion, which is about 65.1% less than the R24.89 billion spent during the same period last year. Diesel usage remains below the year-to-date budget.

“In August, Eskom shared its summer outlook for the period from 01 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, predicting a likely scenario of a load shedding-free summer, including the festive season, due to structural generation improvements. This outlook remains unchanged,” Eskom said. – SAnews.gov.za

Condolences for former US President Jimmy Carter

Condolences for former US President Jimmy Carter

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described former United States of America President Jimmy Carter as a compassionate leader and a champion of human rights following his passing at the weekend.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former United States President Jimmy Carter who we remember as an outstanding, compassionate leader and champion of human rights and peace globally,” he said in a post on X.

According to CNN, the former President passed away at the age of 100 in Georgia on Sunday.

In his reflection of the former President of the US, President Ramaphosa said Carter was an outspoken critic of the apartheid state at a time when the regime was trying to ingratiate itself with influential economies around the world and justify its inhumane policies.

“Among his many distinguished roles, President Carter holds a special place in our history as a member of The Elders, a collective of global leaders brought together on President Nelson Mandela’s 89th birthday in 2007 to be independent moral voices for peace and leadership.

“President Carter’s record includes his engagement in diverse peace negotiations around the world and his unequivocal categorisation of the denial of fundamental human rights and statehood to the people of Palestine as a manifestation of apartheid,” said President Ramaphosa on Monday.

He added that the former statesman justly deserved the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”.

“We celebrate his legacy, his extended lifetime and his enduring ideas. May his soul rest in peace,” said the President in his post. -SAnews.gov.za

Simelane to visit communities affected by Cape Town fires

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane will today oversee the delivery of building materials to communities affected by fires in Cape Town.

The Minister will be joined on her visit by Deputy Minister Tandi Mahambehlala where they will engage with informal settlements dwellers affected by the recent fire disaster.

They will also assess progress being made with regards to the provisions of the emergency housing guidelines - that is rebuild, relocation, restoration and repairs.

“Their programme will include a visit to the Wag ‘n Bietjie informal settlement; Nomzamo in Strand where a 30-year-old man lost his life due to smoke inhalation whilst they battled a fire that left more than 200 people displaced on the morning of Christmas Eve,” the Ministry of Human Settlements said ahead of Monday’s visit.

The Ministers’ visit is expected to get underway at 3pm at the Dunoon informal settlement.

Last week, the Ministers Western Cape MEC for Infrastructure, Tertius Simmers and MMC Carl Pophaim visited the informal settlements affected by fires.

In a social media post last week, City of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis said that city’s Human Settlements staff are working with staff from the National Department of Human Settlements to deliver reconstruction kits to communities as soon as possible.

“We thank the National Department for their co-operation in making this as speedy as possible,” said the mayor at the time. -SAnews.gov.za

Hundreds arrested in Northern Cape on various charges

Police in the Northern Cape have arrested some 429 suspects during the weekly Safer Festive Season operations - a continuation of Operation Shanela.

According to a police statement, SA Police Service members arrested the suspects on a range of charges, including illegal possession of uncut diamonds, illicit mining, murder, rape, illegal dealing in liquor, dealing in drugs, undocumented persons, assaults, malicious damage to property, contravention of protection orders, house breaking and theft, theft out of motor vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Numerous vehicle control points and static roadblocks were conducted across the province on all national and secondary roads, during which 6368 vehicles were stopped and 16 988 persons were searched.

“Compliance inspections were executed at second-hand dealers and liquor premises. Mines, farms, formal and informal businesses were also visited. During the operations the police confiscated firearms, cellphones, dangerous weapons, large volumes of alcoholic beverages, mandrax, tik, dagga and money believed to be proceeds of crime,” the statement read.

Furthermore, a zero-tolerance approach will be taken this New Year’s Eve.

“The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, assured the public that operations will continue unabatedly during New Year celebrations and beyond.

“She reiterated that a zero-tolerance approach will be adopted and the abuse and misuse of alcohol will not be tolerated.  Crimes committed against women and children will be vigorously policed. Authorities will be on high alert at parks, taverns, social gatherings and pleasure resorts,” the statement said.

Communities are also urged to adhere to by-laws “pertaining to the discharging of fireworks and illegal spinning as all perpetrators will face the full might of the law”.

“Road safety will be prioritised and motorists are warned that they can expect to be detained if found transgressing the rules of the road. The authority of the state will be stamped down as we head into 2025,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Law enforcement beefed up as the New Year approaches

Location: News

Law enforcement beefed up as the New Year approaches

The National Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on motorists to drive with caution and respect the rules of the road as the new year approaches.

The corporation said stricter enforcement is in place as holidaymakers make their way across the country.

“Law enforcement will be tighter on the roads and around places of entertainment to ensure the safety of all road users on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and when holiday makers start travelling back to home after the festive season holidays.

“More than one million vehicles have been stopped and checked at various roadblocks throughout the country since the start of the festive season road safety campaign on 1 December. A total of 6470 people have been arrested from among others drunken driving, excessive speeding, driving without driving licences, reckless driving and overloading,” the RTMC said.

Furthermore, more than 120 pedestrians are among those that “have been arrested for jaywalking and the endangering the lives of other road users”.

Unroadworthy vehicles will also be taken off the road by traffic officials.

“Motorists are further called upon to ensure that their vehicles are in a roadworthy state before embarking on their journey back to industrial cities and public transport operators must ensure that they have proper permits to operate on the selected routes.

“[Some] 9309 vehicles have been discontinued and declare unfit to be operated on public roads after various were found when inspected and more than 5700 public transport vehicles were impounded to violation of operator permits,” the corporation said.

The RTMC issued the following safety tips:

  • Reduce speed and increase following distances: Wet roads and reduced visibility can lead to collisions. Drive slowly and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.
  • Avoid driving in flooded areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, or low-lying areas.
  • Stay alert to strong winds: Exercise caution, particularly if driving high-sided vehicles, as winds may destabilise them.
  • Check weather and road updates: Keep informed of the latest weather forecasts and road conditions by listening to radio updates or using reliable apps.
  • Be prepared for lightning and hail: If caught in a thunderstorm, find a safe place to park and remain inside your vehicle. Avoid stopping under trees or power lines.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion: Drivers should rest frequently in shaded areas and stay hydrated during long journeys, especially in areas with extreme heat conditions.

“Motorists are further advised to exercise extreme caution when driving in wet rainy conditions. Truck drivers, public transport operators, and long-distance travellers are urged to prioritise safety and stop at safe rest areas during adverse weather.

“The RTMC further appeals to all drivers to remain patient and cautious on the roads during this period. Severe weather can strike suddenly, and responsible driving is essential to avoid unnecessary incidents and loss of life,” the corporation said. – SAnews.gov.za

RTMC gets tough on unlawful motorists

Twenty-two motorists are set to appear in court in the new year on charges of bribery and corruption.

The 22 were arrested by members of the National Traffic Police for alleged bribery across various parts of Limpopo, said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in a statement.

“The motorists allegedly attempted to induce traffic officers to ignore violations of traffic rules by offering them money. Many of the motorists were caught driving without driving licences. They produced money to avoid arrest for their transgressions,” said the RTMC on Sunday.

The motorists are scheduled to appear in court next year on charges of bribery and corruption.

“The National Traffic Police have been deployed in Limpopo and other provinces to bolster efforts to enforce the law and reduce factors that contribute to road crashes and fatalities.”

Members of the public are urged to report acts of bribery and corruption to the Road Traffic Management Corporation by sending a WhatsApp on 083 2937989 or by calling (012) 999 5407. -SAnews.gov.za

Extra police vigilance on N1 following spiking incidents

Extra police vigilance on N1 following spiking incidents

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) are stepping up efforts to clamp down on crime on the N1, following a surge in spiking incidents on that stretch of road.

In a statement posted on social media, the City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety strongly condemned the criminal behaviour.

“The MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, is deeply outraged by the reckless criminal acts on the N1 North between the Soweto Highway and Maraisburg Off-ramps and the N1 South between Maraisburg and Rand Show Road Off-ramps.

“The deliberate placement of rocks on these routes has caused multiple accidents, jeopardizing the lives of innocent motorists. This is an attack on the safety and dignity of our residents.

“We have directed the…JMPD in partnership with the SAPS [to] act to decisively root out these criminal elements. Joint operations are underway across our freeways and highways, ensuring no road user is vulnerable. During this festive season, we prioritise the safety of every citizen and visitor traveling through Johannesburg,” the statement read.

The department added that equally troubling are “reports alleging that JMPD officers failed to assist a motorist who was nearly mugged in the same area” after the motorist’s tyres were spiked.

“Let it be clear: The department of Public Safety will not tolerate negligence or dereliction of duty by those entrusted to serve and protect. The Internal Affairs Unit has launched a full investigation to ensure that any officer found guilty of misconduct is held accountable.

“We encourage the community to play a role in ensuring safety by reporting emergencies or suspicious activities by contacting 082 060 0057 or 011 375 5911 immediately, and the Department of Public Safety is aware of the alarming rise in road spike incidents across Johannesburg and is dealing with it decisively to ensure the safety of all motorists.

“Lastly, as a department, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the safety and security of all residents. We will continue to lead with decisive action, ensuring that Johannesburg remains a city where justice and accountability prevail,” the statement concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Petrol, diesel prices to increase

Location: News

Petrol, diesel prices to increase

Holidaymakers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as they make their way back home following the announcement that all grades of petrol and diesel are expected to increase from New Year’s Day, this Wednesday.

The price of LP Gas is also expected to increase with a decrease in the cost of paraffin.

This was announced by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR).

The price adjustments for fuel, paraffin and gas are as follows:

  • Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 19c increase.
  • Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): 12c increase.
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 7c increase.
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 10c increase.
  • Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 9c decrease.
  • Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin: 13c decrease.
  • Maximum LPGas Retail Price: 13c increase.

This means a litre of petrol 95 ULP, which currently costs R21.47 in Gauteng, will now cost R21.59 a litre as of Wednesday.

At the coast, a litre of 95 petrol, which cost R20.68 in December, will now cost R20.80 a litre from January.

“The average Brent Crude oil price increased slightly from US$72.70 to US$72.78 during the period under review. The main contributing factors are the OPEC+ decision not to increase production in December and continued oversupply by non-OPEC producers amid low economic growth globally.

“The average international product prices of petrol followed the increasing trend of crude oil while the prices of middle distillates decreased slightly because of higher inventories for the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.

“These factors led to higher contributions to the basic fuel prices of petrol and diesel by 9.33 c/l and 2.93 c/l respectively and lower contributions to illuminating paraffin by 18.92 c/l.

“The Rand depreciated on average, against the US Dollar (from 17.93 to 18.11 Rand per USD) during the period under review when compared to the previous one. This led to higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol, diesel and Illuminating Paraffin by 10.58 c/l, 11.11 c/l and 10.90 c/l respectively,” the department explained. – SAnews.gov.za

Illegal miners voluntarily emerge from Stilfontein mine shafts

Location: News

Illegal miners voluntarily emerge from Stilfontein mine shafts

Government says a number of illegal miners, known as Zama Zamas, have voluntarily emerged from the disused mine shafts in Stilfontein, indicating that these individuals have the capability to exit the underground tunnels independently.

This is according to a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

“Their delayed emergence appears to be a tactic to evade arrest by law enforcement agencies. Contrary to claims that food underground ran out months ago, evidence suggests that the miners have had access to supplies until recently.

“Assertions that aid sent down is shared equally among miners are unverified. Government has not sanctioned any official aid deliveries to individuals engaged in illegal activities. Reports indicate that any supplies reaching the miners are controlled by underground syndicates, often leading to unequal distribution and exploitation.

“The notion that miners remain trapped solely due to police actions is misleading,” said the statement.

SAPS has implemented measures to secure the area and prevent further illegal activities, but designated exit points have been established to allow miners to surface safely and face due legal processes.

NATJOINTS said the miners possess the means to exit independently, as demonstrated by those who have surfaced in recent days.

“Government's stance is to uphold the rule of law; thus, while immediate aid is not provided to facilitate illegal activities, measures are in place to ensure the safety and humane treatment of individuals who choose to come above ground.

“Government acknowledges the presence of various narratives surrounding this issue. It is important to rely on verified information from official channels. SAPS and other government bodies are committed to transparency and will continue to provide accurate updates on the situation,” said government.

It said it remains steadfast in efforts to address illegal mining activities, which pose significant risks to both the individuals involved and the broader community. Operations such as "Vala Umgodi" ("Close the Pits") are ongoing to rehabilitate abandoned mines and prevent further unlawful exploitation.

Government is also working to tackle the underlying socio-economic issues that contribute to illegal mining, including unemployment and lack of economic opportunities.

“We cannot allow a situation where the government is held hostage. All court directives have been complied with thus far, including the allowed food supply on a daily basis.

“SAPS has previously indicated that it is working closely with all stakeholders involved in trying to get those illegal miners extracted from underground. The Stilfontein rescue operation that is being undertaken is not as easy as it seems; it is quite complex, with the depth of the shaft playing a major role in how this operation is carried out.

“Unlike the Sabie operation, in which the shaft is 150 meters deep, the Stilfontein shaft is 2 kilometers deep to where these illegal miners allegedly are, making it a very difficult and highrisk operation to undertake.

“The rescue team has recommended that the necessary resources and expertise must be acquired. The practicality and risks involved are also being taken into account. The liability involved is also a major factor. Police are not experts and can therefore not lead this rescue operation.”

Government said at this stage, the mine must acquire services to conduct the rescue operation, in which costs are involved.

“We are in possession of a quotation that indicates that there must also be a 100% upfront payment.

“It should be agreed upon that the government must approach this process with due diligence and the utmost care, taking into consideration the applicable supply chain management processes involved.

“These processes must be above board in line with relevant prescripts.”

Government urged all individuals involved in these activities to surface voluntarily and engage with law enforcement to ensure their safety and well-being.

Government said it was committed to upholding human rights and the rule of law in all its operations. – SAnews.gov.za

SA sends special envoy to Mozambique

The South African government says it remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and upholding regional stability, amid protests in Mozambique.

“Government has noted with concern the ongoing protests in parts of Mozambique and reports of individuals escaping from a maximum-security prison during this period of unrest. These developments have understandably raised apprehensions among South African citizens regarding the potential cross-border implications.

“South Africa remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and upholding regional stability,” said a statement issued by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.

NATJOINTS said it has intensified its operations along the South Africa-Mozambique border.

These measures aim to prevent and combat any opportunistic crimes that may arise as a result of the unrest, both during and after the protests.

“The Government of South Africa is actively engaging the Government of Mozambique at a bilateral level to address these concerns and explore sustainable solutions.

“Both nations are leveraging their strong diplomatic ties to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented to restore order and enhance security in the affected regions. These engagements reflect the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that underpin the relationship between South Africa and Mozambique,” said the statement.

Government said it recognises the interconnected nature of regional security and is determined to uphold its responsibilities in fostering peace and stability in Southern Africa.

“South Africa reaffirms its commitment to support Mozambique in restoring peace and stability in ensuring the safety of everyone.

“To demonstrate South Africa’s commitment towards finding an amicable solution to the impasse in Mozambique, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent Professor Sydney Mufamadi as a special envoy to engage all relevant stakeholders.”

Government urged citizens to remain calm and to refrain from spreading unverified information that may lead to unnecessary panic.

“The relevant authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide timely updates as new information becomes available. Citizens are encouraged to direct any concerns or inquiries to the appropriate channels to ensure accurate and constructive communication,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za

Mozambique Prepares to Tap into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Potential

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

With plans underway to restart construction of the delayed $20 billion Mozambique LNG project, which promises to produce 13.1 million tonnes of LNG per year for domestic use, it has never been more important to prioritise peace and stability in Mozambique. Following the 2024 general elections, violence during protests has rocked the country, leading to unrest and instability. As the voice of Africa's energy sector and an advocate for Mozambican prosperity, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org) fully supports the country's government and calls for peace, stability and sustainable development as Mozambique enters a new era of energy growth.

Since the discovery of significant natural gas deposits off Mozambique's northern coast in 2010, expectations for the country's economic prosperity have soared. An IMF report predicted $500 billion in total revenues by 2045 and average annual real GDP growth of 24% from LNG exports between 2021 and next year. Energy majors TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and Eni are developing integrated LNG projects, while new upstream companies are entering the market and gas-to-power projects are nearing completion.

Projects such as Coral Sul LNG, the Rovuma LNG facility and the Temane gas-to-power plant have the potential to attract billions of dollars in investment and revenues while providing stable energy to over 2 million homes by 2030. These developments represent not only a success story for international investors, but also a success story for Mozambique. The country is positioned as one of the most dynamic gas markets on the African continent, with offshore reserves that could push it into the world's top ten producers, accounting for up to 20% of African production by 2040.

Geopolitically, these industrialization efforts could benefit the Southern African region as a whole and transform the country into an energy hub for neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland, and South Africa. In addition, a 2,700 km coastline along the Indian Ocean makes Mozambique a gateway for ships crossing the hemisphere, allowing it to specialize in efficient and global energy production while diversifying access to quality goods at low prices from markets in Asia, India, Europe, and America.

For Mozambique to realise its immense potential, however, it is essential that the country remains firmly committed to political stability and sustainable development. A peaceful and stable environment is the foundation on which the international community can confidently build long-term partnerships, ensuring that the immense opportunities presented by the development of its natural resources translate into tangible benefits for all. Mozambique's journey to becoming a leading energy producer is intimately linked to its ability to promote unity, security and democratic principles. A sustained commitment to peace will not only reassure international investors, but will also strengthen the country in a way that drives broad-based prosperity for its people and solidifies its role as a key player in Africa's energy future.

“Peace and stability are essential for Mozambique to unlock its immense economic potential. As the country emerges as a global energy hub, the confidence of the international community rests on a unified and secure nation. A commitment to peace will not only ensure the success of the multi-billion dollar energy projects, but will also ensure long-term prosperity, driving sustainable growth for Mozambique and the entire Southern African region. To achieve this, the government must find common ground and reach agreements that translate into long-term benefits for all the people of the country,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC.

In the interest of Mozambique's prosperity, social well-being and economic development, the AEC calls on the government and opposition to strike a balance and commit to post-colonial and post-conflict stability. Mozambique is at a crossroads: one path leads to increased instability, while the other has the potential to transform the country into a trusted partner in the global energy community.

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Location: News

Emergency meeting in Eastern Cape following tragic death of 20 initiates

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will today lead an emergency ministerial meeting in the Eastern Cape, amid a high number of initiates who have died in the province.

The Minister’s emergency visit follows 20 initiates losing their lives at various initiation schools.

“These deaths sent shockwaves across the country as confirmation of the unfortunate passing of initiates was publicised.

“We must not lose sight of the fact that these late initiates are human beings with loved ones. They also have the right to life like all of us. To this effect, it cannot be business as usual,” a statement read.

The department said it was committed to ensuring that this longstanding cultural practice was performed safely, restoring its dignity.

Ulwaluko or traditional male circumcision is an age-old rite of passage that marks the transition from boyhood to manhood in Xhosa culture.

The ritual is performed to instil social and moral values and to produce men who are responsible, hardworking and honest.

“We know that this has been practised for generations without the challenges we have seen recently.

“The visit of the Minister also confirms that culture does not kill, but it is those who are not following the norms and standards as contained within the Initiation Act who drag down the reputation of this cultural tradition.”

The Minister will visit the Amathole District Municipality which has experienced one of the highest number of initiation-related deaths.

During the visit, Hlabisa will meet the provincial and local government officials, the district initiation forum, provincial initiation committees and the broader communities.

The department acknowledged that the passing of the young men had left their families devastated.

“Therefore, this mass devastation caused by the passing of 20 initiates impacts and affects the whole nation and is tantamount to a disaster.

“We have lost lives. Therefore, we cannot go on as if it is business as usual. Something drastic must happen to protect our youth who undertake this important cultural and traditional journey.”

Additionally, the Minister has appealed for collective efforts to safeguard this ancient cultural practice from abuse, exploitation and possible extinction. – SAnews.gov.za

Western Cape urges collective responsibility to save lives on the roads

Western Cape urges collective responsibility to save lives on the roads

Western Cape Mobility MEC, Isaac Sileku, has expressed deep concern about road fatalities during this festive season, emphasising the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.

The Western Cape experienced a devastating week on the roads with 11 fatalities, including nine pedestrians, between 17 and 22 December 2024.

“Every life lost is a painful reminder of our need to change road behaviour. These are not just statistics, they represent families shattered by preventable tragedies. We must act now to save lives,” Sileku said.

The MEC emphasised the urgent need for action due to the rising number of pedestrian deaths.

Sileku called on the pedestrians to wear reflective clothing to ensure they are visible, especially at night or during poor visibility, and to never walk under the influence as alcohol impairs judgment and increases the risk of accidents.

In addition, he urged pedestrians to always use safe crossings and remain alert of their surroundings.

“Drivers, reduce your speed and stay alert – slowing down saves lives. Pedestrians, make yourself visible, stay sober, and be aware. Now is the time for action, before another life is lost,” he warned.

The Western Cape Provincial Government said it remained committed to reducing road fatalities through constant law enforcement, education and public cooperation.

“Let’s make this festive season one in which we prioritise safety above all else and work together to protect lives on the road.”

Meanwhile, this week 111 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, preventing further tragedies.

In total, 196 integrated operations were conducted, stopping 29 153 vehicles.

Key figures from law enforcement efforts:

•    124 speeding offenses, with a shocking 162 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

•    10 492 fines for violations, including unroadworthy vehicles, reckless driving and fraud.

•    31 vehicles were impounded, and 214 were discontinued for safety violations.

•    148 total arrests, including nine for reckless driving, 11 for fraudulent documents, and four for bribery.

Road safety reminders:

•    If you drink, do not drive. Even small amounts of alcohol impair your judgment. Plan and find a safer way home.

•    Always buckle up. No trip is too short to skip this life-saving step.

•    Watch for pedestrians. Slow down and stay vigilant, especially in areas with high foot traffic. – SAnews.gov.za

Limpopo Premier welcomes arrest of a 28-year-old for statutory rape

The Limpopo Provincial Government has praised the quick action of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Seshego, which resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old man for statutory rape.

The arrest follows an incident where a 13-year-old girl gave birth at Seshego Hospital on 25 December 2024.

SAnews reported today that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day.

According to the National Department of Health, the number of teen mothers has decreased from 145 in 2023 to just under 90.

Among the new teenage mothers is a 13-year-old who gave birth to a healthy baby at Seshego Hospital, located outside Polokwane.

Three 15-year-olds delivered their babies at Emmaus, Hlabisa, and St Andrews Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, a 16-year-old gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp-Tshepong Tertiary Hospital in the North West.

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, expressed her gratitude for the police’s prompt action.

“We welcome this quick response by the SAPS after the hospital had raised concern over a 13-year-old giving birth during Christmas.

“It is now our responsibility to make sure that the judiciary acts in accordance with the extent of the crime. Statutory rape is visible in many parts of our province, and we need to end such a sad chapter.”

The Premier emphasised the importance of protecting the rights of children and ensuring that justice is served.

“The man is in custody in Seshego and will soon make an appearance in court. We must remain vigilant and committed to preventing such heinous acts in our communities,” she added.

The Limpopo Provincial Government is dedicated to collaborating with law enforcement and the judiciary to eradicate crimes against children and create a safe environment for everyone.

“The government will continue to advocate for the protection of vulnerable individuals and ensure that those who perpetrate such crimes are held accountable.”

The department said the decrease in teenage mothers may be due to several interventions, including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) programmes, a healthy lifestyle campaign, and the establishment of youth-friendly zones in primary health facilities nationwide.

These initiatives create an enabling environment for young people to access sexual and reproductive health services without waiting in the queue with general patients.

The interventions are implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Departments of Basic Education and Social Development, the South African National AIDS Council, Higher Health, loveLife, and Soul City.

The aim is to increase the uptake of family planning services, reduce stigma, and minimise unplanned pregnancies among young people by promoting contraception methods. – SAnews.gov.za

Beach tagging programme reunites lost children with their families

Beach tagging programme reunites lost children with their families

The City of Cape Town’s Identikidz programme tagged 25 770 children over the public holidays, reuniting 169 lost children with their families.

Coordinated by the Community, Arts, and Culture Development Department, the busiest beaches were Strandfontein (3 264 tags), Strand (3 183 tags) and Monwabisi (3 005 tags).

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, said the number of children tagged is an indication of how packed the beaches were.

“It is easy for young children to lose sight of where their family is located and get lost in the crowds. A number of the lost children in the past two days were not tagged.

“Parents and caregivers can rest assured that their information is confidential and is only used when their child is lost and it helps us to keep your little ones safe,” van der Ross explained.

With more holidays and good weather coming up, van der Ross encouraged parents and caregivers who visit the beach with children to find the Identikidz registration desks and get their little ones tagged.

The tag helps reunite lost or displaced children with their families.

The team collaborates closely with the provincial Department of Social Development, the city’s enforcement agencies, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure the safety and successful reunification of these children.

The rest of the participating beaches returned the following statistics:

•    Camps Bay: 1 933
•    Muizenberg: 2 904
•    Mnandi: 2 589
•    Sea Point: 460
•    Harmony Park: 1 815
•    Gordon’s Bay: 1 486
•    Fish Hoek: 1 109
•    Milnerton Beach: 1 165
•    Melkbosstrand: 664
•    Silwerstroom: 893
•    Lagoon Beach: 332
•    Big Bay: 785
•    Maiden’s Cove: 183 – SAnews.gov.za

Concern over increase in violent crime in KZN

Concern over increase in violent crime in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has expressed deep concern over the increase in fatal violent crimes reported in the province during the festive season.

In the early hours of Wednesday, 26 December, three men, aged between 26 and 36, were shot and killed execution-style, in the KwaMpondo area of Dabhazi, Nongoma, located in the Zululand District Municipality.

The reports suggest that the deceased had one gunshot wound in the head.

“We appeal to community members to assist law enforcement with information that could lead to the apprehension of whoever is responsible for this heinous crime.

“Law enforcement cannot win the war against crime without the active participation of community members,” said Ntuli.

In another incident in the Amahlongwa area in Umkomazi, police reports revealed that a woman was stabbed multiple times by her partner in the early hours of Thursday.

However, swift police action led to the arrest of the perpetrator.

“We are concerned about this blatant disregard for human life we are witnessing along the South Coast of the province.  This is a call for concern. Such crimes point to a deep moral decay in our society. We must appeal to all men to protect our women at all costs,” the Premier added.

Ntuli emphasised that the provincial government, law enforcement, traditional leadership, and various stakeholders are working diligently to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

The Premier believes that it is the responsibility of all men to respect and always protect the dignity and right to life of all women.

Yesterday, Ntuli, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and Acting Head of the Department of Community Safety and Liaison Nkosenye Zulu led a safety awareness campaign and walk.

The event began at uShaka Marine World and concluded at Suncoast Casino.

The walk was designed to enhance safety measures during the festive season, allowing the Premier to engage directly with holidaymakers, beachgoers, community members, and businesspeople.

It also highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents and holidaymakers. – SAnews.gov.za

Public health facilities deliver over 1360 Christmas babies

Public health facilities deliver over 1360 Christmas babies

The Department of Health has announced that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day.

This figure represents approximately 300 fewer births than the 1 708 babies delivered in 2023 and about 50 fewer than the 1 414 babies born in 2022.

The births included six sets of twins that were safely delivered in public health facilities across the country.

The first Christmas baby was born exactly at midnight at Osindisweni Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by another delivery at 12:01 am at Nkhensani Hospital in Limpopo.

Two deliveries were recorded at 12:02 am at Standerton Hospital in Mpumalanga and Madwaleni Hospital in the Eastern Cape.

The department reports that Gauteng recorded the highest number of births, totalling 393.

This is followed by the Eastern Cape with 196 births, and both the Western Cape and Limpopo each with 172 births.

Mpumalanga recorded 152 births, the North West had 102, the Free State counted 79, and the Northern Cape had 49 births.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the current number stands at 42, as the department awaits final figures.

According to the department, the number of teen mothers has decreased from 145 in 2023 to just under 90.

Among the new mothers is a 13-year-old who gave birth to a healthy baby at Seshego Hospital, located outside Polokwane in Limpopo.

Three 15-year-olds delivered their babies at Emmaus, Hlabisa, and St Andrews Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, a 16-year-old gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp-Tshepong Tertiary Hospital, in the North West.

Decrease in teenage pregnancies

The department believes that the decrease in teenage mothers may be due to several interventions, including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) programmes, a healthy lifestyle campaign, and the establishment of youth-friendly zones in primary health facilities nationwide.

Immunisation and care

The department urged mothers to immediately commence the developmental journey of their newborns which entails immunisation to achieve a long and healthy life for their babies.

“For every child to achieve their full potential in terms of healthy growth and development, they need healthcare, the right nutrition, initiation of exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation and timely care during illness.”

The first 1 000 days of a child’s life are important because they lay the foundation for their physical, emotional, and academic development.

“The department will walk side by side with the new mothers as they embark on this incredible journey of motherhood,” it said, adding that parents should ensure they are up to date with immunisation to protect their children against vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and polio.

Meanwhile, mothers who subscribed to MomConnect, a free text-based programme, are encouraged to to remain active on this platform.

The programme covers various topics such as newborn care, breastfeeding, immunisation, and appointment reminders.

G20: A win for South Africa; a win for Africa

Location: News

G20: A win for South Africa; a win for Africa

South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 is a first for the African continent and provides a platform for the African continent’s voice to be better heard, writes Neo Semono.

A few weeks ago, on 01 December 2024, South Africa took over the Group of 20 baton from its fellow BRICS sister country Brazil.

While the G20 is an international forum of developed and developing countries seeking  solutions to the globe’s economic and financial issues, I, like many others, feel a sense of pride knowing that an event of such magnitude is to be held on African soil come next November, and that South Africa now holds the Presidency of this enormous global body and forum.

We will certainly make the world proud, just as we have done with other global events like the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, BRICS, the World Conference Against Racism, and the World Economic Forum (WEF) Africa, to name a few.

The United States of America, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and India are some of the member countries of the G20 that was founded in 1999 as an informal forum.

The respected forum began its life following the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998. The Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the most important industrialised and developing economies met to discuss international economic and financial stability.

In its earlier days, the forum focused on macroeconomic issues but has since expanded its agenda to include trade, health and climate change, among others.

The G20 members represent 85% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and it may hold true that having the Presidency held by an African country, could work favourably to help African countries win the ear of the developed world - in turn helping the continent achieve its objectives of tackling economic growth, ending poverty and mitigating climate change, among others.

From the bat, South Africa as the only African country forming part of the G20, has been vocal about bringing African issues to the G20 agenda.

During Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to South Africa recently, President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa “will place Africa’s development and the challenges facing countries of the Global South firmly on the G20 agenda.”

“We will seek to galvanise support for the AU’s Agenda 2063, as we pursue an inclusive global agenda,” the President said in his talks with his West African counterpart.

Agenda 2063 is the African Union’s (AU) development blueprint to achieve inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development over a 50-year period. Among its goals is to have a high standard of living, quality of life and well-being for all citizens, as well as the African continent taking full responsibility for financing her development.

The President’s remarks are intrinsic to the core of South Africa’s DNA of seeking inclusivity, not only within her peoples, but with the people of the world too.

Realising that just as no person is an island, no country is an island, and the President has said that the country would support Nigeria’s quest to become part of the G20.

This after the AU joined the European Union (EU) in becoming the second regional body to form part of the group in September 2023.

In assuming the Presidency of the G20 under the theme:  “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”  - South Africa has hit the ground running having hosted the first Sherpa meeting on 9 and 10 December.

For those like myself who have to become acquainted with the new buzz words – Sherpas are responsible for taking the discussions and agreements made during G20 meetings held ahead of the summit, to Heads of State and Government at the final Leaders’ Summit, next year.

South Africa’s Sherpa is the Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Zane Dangor, who is supported by Sous-Sherpas, Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo and Advocate Nokukhanya Jele.  Sous-Sherpas are senior officials who support a Sherpa in preparing for the Summit – think sous-chef.

Dangor described the meeting as “very successful, robust and inclusive”.

The purpose of the G20, what has been achieved, as well as what has not been achieved were among the issues on the table at the meeting.

If anything, the meeting was a clear indication that the forum is not a window dressing exercise but a frank assessment of issues under the microscope and finding solutions to the challenges at hand.

With only a few weeks into the Presidency of the G20, South Africa is not sleeping on the job, but has hit the ground running.
It will take all sectors of society to make this Presidency a success. Let our ubuntu, the scenery of our beautiful country, frankness to speak our mind, and the ability to find solutions to challenges come to the fore. We ought to do it for ourselves and future generations.

Like we as a nation, had made an impact on all who graced our land in 2010 - let us make a similar, if not bigger impact on those who will grace our land next November. It will be time for us as a nation to showcase our sparkly spirit again to the world! And leave them coming back for more- SAnews.gov.za

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

No. 1 Hair is number one in haircare

By: Bongani Lukhele

In 1993 Andrew Lebitsa, a Free State Black Industrialist, participated in an empowerment and capacity building project that he said was initiated by South Africa’s first Black President, Nelson Mandela, and New York’s first Black Mayor, David Dinkins.

The objective of the programme was to develop a pool of black corporate bank managers to equip them with skills, knowledge and information that would empower them to play a critical role in the transformation of the banking industry after the country had transitioned to democracy.

Lebitsa spent six months at the Chase Merchant Bank and Baruch College in New York honing his corporate management skills in the bank and acquiring knowledge through the college’s Executive Management Development Programme.

At the time, little did Lebitsa know that he was bound to follow in the footsteps of the two visionary leaders and blaze his own trail, as he attests that his No.1 Hair company is the only black-owned hair braids manufacturing company in the country.

This was made possible by the support he received from the Black Industrialists Programme of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).

In line with the vision of Mandela and Dinkins, the objective of the scheme is to produce a pool of capable and successful Black Industrialists who will actively and meaningfully participate in the manufacturing industry and contribute to growing the economy, creating jobs and transform the sector in particular, and the country’s economy in general.

Today, No.1 Hair, which operates from the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Harrismith, is providing employment to 60 people who are producing the synthetic hair braids, or hair extensions as they are commonly known, for both domestic and Southern African markets.

“After a long spell in the petroleum franchise and retail industries, I got into a hardware products import and distribution industry. Many of my retail clients requested me to import hair as well.  This was initially never in my mind. But after conducting a research I realised that it was a R9-billion industry in South Africa that these people were indirectly encouraging me to participate it. I decided to get into it,” recalls Lebitsa.

After bouncing off the idea with the late prominent businessperson, Don Mkhwanazi, he advised Lebitsa to consider setting up a plant and manufacture hair in South Africa, instead of importing it.

He connected him with two South Korean businessmen who assisted him to set up the factory in the Maluti-a-Phofung SEZ. The location was an obvious choice for Lebitsa as he once worked in the zone while he was employed by the Free State Development Corporation as a property manager.

“That is how No.1 Hair was born,"he said.

R60 million state-of-the-art plant

The R60 million state-of-the-art plant was set up with assistance from the dtic and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

“After a delay caused by the COVID-19 [pandemic], we eventually started the production of our brand of hair braids in January 2021. We started with black hair braids and extended our range to numerous other colours over a period of time,” said Lebitsa.

He concedes that penetrating the hair market as a black manufacturer has been and remains a steep challenge.

“Firstly, consumers of this product are used to particular famous brands that are all imported. It is not easy for them to warm up to and embrace a new, unknown product. Secondly, but more importantly; it is the problem of perception and stereotypes that one has to deal with in the industry.

“As a black manufacturer, you are already disadvantaged when approaching buyers who source products for big companies and retail stores.

Summer season

“From not even giving you a chance to present your products to them, to doubting both your capability as a businessperson to deliver on orders, and the quality of your products. It is a big challenge. However, one order at a time we have managed to build quite [a] sizeable number of clients,” he adds.

Lebitsa’s spirit lifts when he starts speaking about the summer season that he says sparks a high demand in hair braids. To this end, he has received huge amounts of orders that will soon see all of his production lines running at full capacity.

“Despite all these market penetration challenges, we are making steady progress and continue to grow the company.  Slowly but surely, we are increasing our own market share.

“We pride ourselves in being a proudly South African company whose products and raw material are produced in the country.

“We are hopeful that the Buy Local Campaign will instil patriotism in consumers of our products and enable them to choose locally-produced quality products instead of poor quality imports.”

He revealed that his plan is to expand his business by diversifying his product range and venturing into the manufacturing of hair care products. - SAnews.gov.za

Taxi and bus owners urged to improve road safety

Taxi and bus owners urged to improve road safety

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on public transport operators and the freight industry to step up efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities this festive season, following a spate of fatal crashes involving minibus vehicles and trucks.

In the most recent crash, seven people were killed and five injured when a minibus overturned on the N3, near Grootvlei, in Mpumalanga.

“Many of these crashes have occurred in the early hours of the morning suggesting that fatigue may have played a role. Fatigue is one of the leading contributors to road accidents, with research showing that drowsy and distracted drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in collisions.

“Physical and mental fatigue can impair reaction times, decision-making and attention - skills essential for safe driving. Drivers who are physically tired or mentally exhausted may overlook warning signs, misjudge traffic conditions, or fail to respond quickly to sudden changes in events,” said the RTMC in a statement.

Meanwhile, the corporation also advised all motorists to exercise extreme caution as the South African Weather Service has predicted rainfall in many parts of the country.

“Drivers should reduce speed and avoid crossing flooded bridges,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za

Work continues at Bishop Lavis Court despite damage

Operations at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court have been able to continue despite protest action over the past weekend which left parts of the court building damaged.

This is according to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DJCOD).

“Despite the challenges posed by the protest, court operations are proceeding as usual, with all matters including criminal cases, maintenance, domestic violence and estates proceeding as scheduled. No cases have been referred to other courts and the court roll continues without interruption.

“We are pleased to report that no court files were stolen or damaged during the unrest. This has enabled the court to maintain essential services without any setbacks,” the department said on Monday.

The department added that an assessment of the damage to the court building has been completed and “estimates for repairs are still pending as the department’s supply chain management team is currently managing the matter”.

The department condemned the “acts vandalism, arson and theft that occurred” during the protest action.

“These brazen criminal acts are not only an attack on the rule of law but also a direct assault on the justice system that exists to serve and protect the community. We call for swift action to bring those responsible to justice and urge the community to fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities as investigations continue.

“Courts are institutions that uphold justice, equality and order in our democracy. We therefore appeal to all members of the community to respect and protect these pillars of our legal system.

“The department remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice for all. Let us stand united in defending our courts and preserving our courts and preserving the values they represent,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za
