The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is concerned about the conduct of the Tshwane Metro Council’s Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana, who is allegedly bending rules to accommodate the ruling coalition.

This resulted in the abrupt termination of the Freedom Front Plus’s participation in an important debate on the sinkhole crisis in the Metro.

Although the party was prepared to support the delayed report on sinkholes during the council meeting, a proposed amendment to include all 63 sinkholes in the declaration of a local state of disaster was rejected.

It is illogical and unacceptable to declare only one sinkhole a disaster while ignoring the rest.

The Freedom Front Plus maintains that the Tshwane Metro is a reactive municipality lacking a sense of urgency.

According to the Metro’s own data, 88% of the sinkholes are caused by crumbling water, sewage and stormwater networks, which, in turn, is a direct result of years of neglect and poor maintenance.

The technical lifespan of the existing water system, which still relies on asbestos pipes and is, on average, 55 to 60 years old, was over years ago.

The party will not wait until this decay leads to loss of life before taking action.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep engaging to ensure that all sinkholes are included in the declaration of a local state of disaster, with a specific focus on the Clifton Lane area. This sinkhole threatens critical infrastructure, including a Rand Water pipeline and Eskom power lines. Repairs are estimated to cost R50 million.

The Freedom Front Plus also plans to submit a petition with 3 500 signatures to the National Disaster Management Centre to declare a provincial state of disaster, thereby securing access to further funding.

The party will keep monitoring the situation and holding the Executive Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, accountable to ensure transparency and honesty.

Transparency and honesty toward Tshwane’s residents is non-negotiable.

Freedom Front Plus Social Welfare: The party supports social welfare programs that benefit vulnerable communities.
