The traffic department of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) is facing total collapse after a service provider removed all its traffic control equipment and related data.

As a result, the Department no longer has access to information on outstanding fines issued from 2021 until 16 July this year.

The removed equipment includes speed cameras and cameras used to record motor vehicle accidents.

The service provider removed its equipment before the end of its contract, because the Municipality failed to pay. A new system was implemented on 16 July this year.

This is just one of several service providers that Emfuleni has been unable to pay due to financial mismanagement.

Last week, the Municipality had to scrambled to pay a portion of the outstanding rent for its customer service centre in Paul Kruger Street, Vanderbijlpark, after the owner of the building locked the entrances.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is concerned that motorists may exploit the absence of an effective traffic control system and violate traffic regulations.

The poor governance of the Emfuleni Municipality has to stop; voters simply have no other choice but to oust the ANC government in the 2026 municipal elections.
