The renewal of and South Africa’s continued inclusion in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is not merely desirable – it is absolutely essential for the country’s economic survival, job creation and growth.
AGOA offers preferential access to the American market, which is crucial for creating thousands of jobs and facilitating billions of rand in exports.
South Africa’s economy is increasingly dependent on trade, especially amid declining commodity prices and shifting global demand.
Our largest trade partner, China, is experiencing further economic slowdown, putting additional pressure on our already fragile economy.
In 1994, South Africa contributed 28% of Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP); but by 2024, it had shrunk to just 14%. Globally, South Africa’s share declined from 0,54% to 0,37%. This economic decline is unacceptable and clearly reflects years of maladministration.
Despite the United States Senate’s approval of AGOA’s extension, South Africa’s inclusion remains uncertain – and the blame rests squarely on the ANC’s reckless foreign policy.
Military cooperation with China, Russia and Iran, combined with new American trade tariffs (including a possible 25% levy on countries supporting Iran), threatens South Africa’s access to this vital lifeline.
The ANC’s ideological ties are jeopardising thousands of job opportunities and our economic recovery. It is time to drastically review and amend our current foreign policy, and implement a responsible, West-oriented foreign policy that prioritises free trade, market access and pragmatism over dogma.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will relentlessly pressure government to change its policy and promote a genuine free-market economy.
South Africa deserves better than a government that knowingly jeopardises our trade opportunities.
