The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) reiterates its demand for conducting comprehensive lifestyle audits of all provincial and municipal officials in Mpumalanga.

This measure is not only a reasonable request, but also a crucial instrument in combating seemingly rampant corruption.

Recently, two senior councillors from the Emalahleni Municipality were arrested after being implicated in alleged fraud amounting to R500 000 to secure a lease agreement.

This incident clearly demonstrates how corrupt government networks are thriving.

Another recent example is the scandal at the provincial Department of Education, where the purchase of 22 Dell XPS laptops at R91 482,50 each prompted an investigation. The investigation uncovered that the order was erroneous (smaller Dell XPS models were delivered) alongside findings of irregularities and poor tender practices. Eight officials were identified as complicit in the fraud, and lifestyle audits were strongly recommended.

These incidents reveal a pattern of self-enrichment at the expense of public trust and taxpayers’ money. Lifestyle audits provide an effective means to identify unexplained wealth, unverified income and misconduct among officials. These audits will not only expose corrupt individuals, but also serve as a deterrent for future offenders.

The Freedom Front Plus has requested the provincial government to immediately:

  • Implement a framework for periodic lifestyle audits;
  • Conduct these audits on all office-bearers and political leaders;
  • Publicly name the offenders, and take appropriate criminal and disciplinary action.

Without such stringent measures, corruption will continue to fester in Mpumalanga and corrupt officials will keep harming the province with impunity.

    Boerewors — spicy South African sausage [boor-uh-vors] Meaning ‘farmer’s sausage’, this term describes a savory sausage that was developed by the Afrikaners approximately 200 years ago. Boerewors is usually ‘braaied’ and eaten on a hot dog roll with tomato sauce and mustard. Make sure you roll the ‘r’ when pronouncing this word.
