The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has warned residents of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) to temporarily avoid the Municipality’s Customer Service Centre on the ground floor of the OK Building in Vanderbijlpark after the parking lot was flooded with sewage.
The sewage spill is causing an unbearable stench, rendering the parking area and building inaccessible and a health hazard.
The sewage problem, which had still not been resolved by Thursday morning, is not an isolated incident.
Since the Municipality began leasing the building, there have been seven similar incidents, three of which occurred in 2025.
Each time, repairs and cleaning the area take days, while the building’s air conditioning systems are also dysfunctional, exacerbating the situation.
The Municipality pays R1,3 million per month to lease the four-storey building, which houses various departments.
Under the lease agreement, the Municipality is responsible for the building’s maintenance.
The Freedom Front Plus has notified the relevant authorities, requesting them to address the problem at once.
Several residents voiced their dissatisfaction to the Freedom Front Plus on Wednesday, while officials working in the building lodged a formal complaint with the Gauteng Provincial Government and Emfuleni’s Department of Environmental Health.
They demand that the situation be investigated and remedied immediately.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act stipulates that employees’ work environment has to be clean and safe. If the sewage spill is not resolved soon, the party will insist that the building be declared unfit for use until it has been disinfected.
The Freedom Front Plus will revisit the premises to monitor the situation and, if no action is taken, contact Mayor Sipho Radebe directly to bring the urgency of the matter to his attention.
