Port Alfred – With just 30 days before the inaugural Port Alfred Easter Festival, Port Alfred is gearing up for a pivotal long weekend.

The Port Alfred Easter Festival will take place over the Easter Weekend, March 29th – April 1st, and will showcase the vibrant sports and culture of the coastal town of Port Alfred and demonstrate all that this beautiful Eastern Cape coastal gem – situated at the mouth of the Kowie River – has to offer.

The Port Alfred Easter festival will deliver unforgettable moments and attract visitors – both competitors and spectators – via the sports events and the Bands On The Beach music concert at Guido’s.

As a result of much public interest, there will be a Wharf Street and Van Der Riet Street Market on Saturday.

The latest addition to the festival is the Masibambisana Amateur Boxing Tournament at the Jauka Hall on Saturday at 11 am. The Royal St Andrews Hotel and PicknPay Port Alfred proudly sponsor the Masibambisana Amateur Boxing Tournament. More can be found on the Port Alfred Easter Festival WEBSITE.

There is also much excitement about the two surfing tournaments that are the anchor events of the Port Alfred Easter Festival.

The Rip Curl GromSearch Port Alfred, presented by the Royal St Andrews Hotel, is the second contest in a five-event series at prime surfing venues along our coastline. The first Rip Curl GromSearch took place in Cape Town and was a great success. This event caters for boys and girls in the U12, U14, Premier U16, and U18 divisions.

The Rip Curl Cup, presented by the Royal St Andrews Hotel, is a Surfing South Africa Specialty Event with two divisions – Open Men and Open Women – it is open to anyone.

East Beach in Port Alfred has been host to many successful surfing events over the years and is highly regarded as a prime surf spot by surfers like 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and current fourth-ranked World Surf League Championship Tour surfer Jordy Smith.

The Rip Curl GromSearch and the Rip Curl Cup are both supported by Sea Harvest. Entries will open soon on the Surfing South Africa website. LinkOnline will be sponsoring free WiFi hotspots down at the beach for competitors and spectators, and there will be free downloadable high-action images from the surf events throughout the four days of the competition.

While the Rip Curl tournaments are running at East Beach, there will also be a South African Bodyboarding Challenge taking place at West Beach. All three of these contests will be under the watchful eyes of the NSRI Station 11 Water Safety Crew.
